Damn, this has CTE written all over it. I hope the NFL steps in to help.

I’m all for looking into ignored science and safety protocols for older players with lengthy careers, particularly in the 70-90s. And I’m not opposed to help. But this guy has been a knucklehead since his Sophomore year in college. Like AH, I think this is more a case of moron-itis. It runs in my wife’s side of the family so I’ve seen it first hand. Bad stuff.

Sounds like a drug-crazed incident; if not he's incredibly stupid. Since the Pack dismissed him he's out of the NFL and circling the drain. He'll soon be getting a room with a restricted view.

Sports, and college used to be used to help kids from troubled backgrounds escape and change their life’s trajectory. See Lawrence Wright.

In recent years, it’s become fashionable to allow kids to bring that culture with them to school, and there’s no one telling them they need to leave all that behind. So while they are college educated and wealthy, even if only temporarily, they’re still the same troubled person they always were, and are still steeped in the toxic culture they were raised in. Basically they’ve been told it’s ok to be this way. And we wonder why there’s one of these stories every week.

I agree with almost everything in your post except that 'they are college educated'. Many--maybe most--of these kids of the street leave college just as illiterate as they were the first day they stepped on campus to have someone fill in their college registration forms for them.

In today’s society we have a tendency to glorify things that are negative as some stumble over themselves to prove that they are inclusive and not racist instead of being honest about the impact of a bad environment.

Intelligence has always had little to do with a piece of paper that says you passed classes for 4+ years. I dated a girl who was finishing up her Bachelor's at 31 and was just amazed at the fact that she woke up the day after graduation still not very bright and quite limited in her prospects. One of the primary reasons we have the current student loan debt issue in this country. But while we can debate how smart they are when leaving UF, they do at least have the ability to say they have a degree to get them in a door. And, to sort of expound on my original post, their leaving illiterate is precisely part of the issue. Too many aren't interested in improving that side of their lives because they're being told they'll be an NFL star and/or the world will accept them as they are. Reality hits at some point and we see this.

I was fortunate to have a family that interacted with some of the players in the 90s when I was growing up. They came from the same bad areas as they do today. But sports was used and seen as an escape from all of that. So while their friends and peers were getting swept up in the wrong things back in Carol City/Jax/Atlanta/, having kids, getting arrest records, etc., they were changing some of those characteristics within themselves and giving themselves an opportunity to have a better life, NFL or not. We knew a recruiter that would always marvel at the transformation considering where some of them started. My father still stays in relative contact with a couple of the players who went on to have successful careers, despite never sniffing the league. Again, it's just not like that anymore.
