I've worn Moabs everyday for going on 20 years... with my Asolo Fugitives mixed in as needed.

When I travel, I only take two backpacks... my camelback motherlode for clothes and shoes and stuff, and my arc teryx blade 24 as my "moblie office." I can't check bags given a lot of my connections and I always have everything with me. If you love your Moabs and want an overshoe that works for snow, water, mud, anything... i carry these in the bottom of my motherlode... also for going on 20 years. Neos overshoes are da bomb.

Do any of you hikers use Guthooks app? If so I have a question, I can't seem to get the app to ignore my location. Even when I turn my phones GPS off it still tells me I am 455 miles from the trail and calculates my mileage on my routes from where I am currently at. Is there any way to turn this function off?

Well after a half a day of messing with it I think I figured out what I am trying to do the app won't do period. I uninstalled the app then during the reinstall process I denied it to know my location. Everything worked fine except it gives me no mileage data. Looks like it needs your location to calculate mileage from.

I'm hoping to hit the trail next week if nothing comes up. No specific plans I'd like to do a couple of weeks maybe about 80 miles or so. Don't want to push it because I have been sick a bit lately and have some foot and knee issues and just not sure what my capabilities are right now. I'll post pictures when I have cell phone service if this works out.

Anyone doing any hiking these holidays?

I am going to do a quick one (around 40 miles) this week on the Chattooga River Trail. Will be a little cold at night ... in the upper 20's so I will see how my hammock setup works.

I went last week for a one nighter (a little under a 20 miler) on the Foothills trail. I did not see anyone but when I got back to my truck there were 4 trucks/jeeps there (before there were none). Also stopped by the lower whitewater river falls SC. That was pretty.

Yeah if I really wanted to chance running into some inbreds hopped up on Methamphetamine and illegal Corn mash I'd just buy tickets to a game in Neyland stadium...….

The aspect most enjoyed in hiking....solitude.

That and self reliance. Actually, self reliance is the greatest.

I'm taking the easy way out. I am dropping my weight down to around 42 pounds and only hiking an elevation gain around 3000 ft. (actually higher than I thought, but over 20 miles its not much).

I want to try to catch some trout, but not sure I will have any time to play.

At 42 pounds, you'll also be ready for your 4th birthday all over again.

I hike a little. I have all the gear (except a pillow) but I haven't done any overnights yet.

I did 10 miles on the Lake to Ocean trail last Sunday. It was nice but it was hot, too hot.

If the weather is cool enough my brother and I are going to do 60 miles around Ocala next weekend. I need to stop at REI and get a pillow first though.

When I lived in Orlando early 90's always did the Florida Trail true ONF. Then did some others in ANF.

                Enjoy!

Thanks, I've been going out down here on the OTL and acquiring gear for a few months. My brother is a very experienced hiker. He's moving to Colorado soon though, I'll fly out there and go do some mountain hiking with him next fall.

Yes real mountains. It's a different story than flat lands. Used to do 18-20 without too much effort (of course younger and dumber). In the Appalachians, I generally only get 12-13...maybe 14.

Suggestion. On mountains, take trekking poles. Really help the knees and balance late in the day.

Ha! I use them here in the flatlands. I do the OTL hikes with a smaller pack, maybe 10-12lbs total, as training. The trekking poles really do work to balance the load and also to give the hands something to do while plodding along.

Our folks have a house in the Appalachians, we had planned to do the Benton MacKaye this spring but his move popped up pretty quickly. I guess that's out unless I can convince the wife to gear up and go with me. That's pretty unlikely though.

The full Benton MacKaye? Or one of the loops?

I have been wanting to do the GA loop for many years now. Just not had the time to take off. Maybe this coming year.

One of the loops. Our folk's place is pretty close to the trailhead there at Springer Mountain. The GA loop would be good but we would need probably 4 nights to get it all in, it is supposed to be tough.
