Pray to whatever god you believe in, sacrifice a small animal, wear your lucky underwear for the next 26 days without washing them (Wobble), if you're anywhere near Indian burial grounds, stay away from them! If you have any unused favors that could build positive karma, do them! Any superstitions you have for good luck, follow them!

We need the absolute most positive juju for the start of football camp so that no players suffer any major injuries that will end their seasons before they begin. No torn ACLs, no mysterious illnesses, no broken bones, no torn pecs for offensive linemen. Nothing! Do your part, Gator Nation, our boys are counting on you!

At this time last year we were already minus Driskel (appendectomy), Debose, Halapio, Matt Jones and we were mere days away from losing Chaz Green. Arguably, that was our 3 best skilled offensive players and two best o-linemen before the dew had even burned off the grass on the first fall practice. We're already ahead of last year, God, I hope it stays that way.

I was really interested in the hydration issue. I was at Shands, this morning and had a discussion with my Doctor about the injuries we suffered last year. He really believes that poor hydration lead to the majority of the injuries. I didnt know that being dehydrated makes your tendons and ligaments weaker. After I thought about it and how cramps affect you, when you are dehydrated, it made sense. He told me that FL had implemented a new hydration program. I saw it yesterday, during the interviews with the players - several of them had the water bladders on their backs. No more midday practices either. Hopefully, Science will trump superstition and we will see few to no serious injuries.

I think dehydration may have had a little to do with it. But I think the strength and conditioning played a role as well. Sometimes guys get more weight and muscle than their bodies can handle. Also a lack of flexibility contributes to injuries.

Not practicing in the middle of the day in August will surely help. Besides, with our first three home games being at night, there's really no need to prepare for the kind of heat they'd be facing for noon games in September. It surely won't be that hot in Alabama (which will most likely be a 3:30 start or night game), and then after that, heat is no longer a factor anyway.

I asked my Doctor about that theory and he laughed. He said that unless you injure a ligament or tendon lifting weights, strengthening had nothing to do with it. Actually, he said that building muscle strengthens joints. His final point - if it was caused by the strength and conditioning program, we would see more injuries off the practice field.
