A strange thing happened at BHG last evening. Whether it was redemption or a temporary stay of execution might depend on your perspective concerning embattled coach Billy Napier and the season’s drama, much of it at his hands (and mind) as well as that of AD Scott Stricklin, the latter who appears to know his own fate is bound tightly with the heretofore stumbling HC. But for a night at least, Florida and the Gators looked…competent, even if it was in ways sort of old school, relying on the kicking game for both scoring and keeping LSU facing a long field much of the game, having a QB stay strictly in the pocket and distribute the ball very deftly and effectively, and a defense that grew stronger as the game progressed, eventually stopping the Tigers and their QB Garrett Nussmier, squaring the season record at 5-5 and putting the Gators a step closer to bowl eligibility.

Now, do I think Billy is magically cured? Nope. Not cured, but maybe better in a John Fetterman positive response to a stroke kind of way. Call me skeptical but one game alone is an anomaly and until he can back it up with another against a competent opponent (Ole Miss anyone?) it will remain as such. But it was great to end a 5 game losing streak to the Tigers and have the defense actually rising instead of wilting as the game progressed. I mentioned in another thread about the strength and conditioning and concerns about us getting pushed around on the LOS…well let me tell you, as the game went on, it was our D front that was doing the pushing and effectively closed the door on Nussmier and the Tigers’ O and any ideas of a comeback. And for good measure, the OL stepped up and protected DJ as well as opening a lane for a late rushing TD to finally put the Tigers on ice and secure a much needed 27-16 victory.

* Some surprising stats: Total Plays - LSU 92, Florida 43! Time of Possession - LSU 41:43, Florida 18:17! Total Yards - LSU 392, Florida 339. Final Score - Florida 27, LSU 16!

* Big tip of the cap to the D. Bent a little early but didn’t break and got stronger as the game wore on. Heck, they survived 92 snaps against them by the Tigers and only allowed one TD. Tyreak Sapp was a man along with several other defenders and to see the unit not just survive but grow stronger as the game wore on brought back memories of past Gator defenses that were the backbones and hallmarks of some great teams.

* Kicking game, as mentioned, was big. Crawshaw was his usual reliable self and it’s not surprising that the announcers mentioned that he’s a finalist for the top punter award and Smack was big with two long FGs and his KOs. Reliability and consistency from these two was important in the win last night.

* If Billy didn’t do but one thing right, it was making sure DJ didn’t run the ball, staying in the pocket and making most of the throws he needed to make for us to win the game. It also took some emphasis on the OL to provide adequate protection, which they did by allowing NO Sacks! Whether great planning or dumb luck with a little help from LSU, it was a welcome departure from what many of us had come to expect.

For a week at least, we’ve got something other than the bitter taste of an SEC @ss-kicking in our mouth. It feels better, but it’s also a reminder of what we’ve been missing out on for so long now. Next week sets up an interesting scenario, a game against a rising SEC opponent whose current HC is considered a possible if not favored replacement for our beleaguered HC. Talk about theatre of the bizarre! But these aren’t usual football times these days, especially for the Gators. Next week will definitely be “must see TV” regardless of where you sit on the current state of the program!

Go Gators!

Good stuff Cover, as usual. Thank you.

Remarkable stats for this game as you mentioned.
43 Plays and 339 yards!
I mean, what could we have done with 65-75 plays???
113 yards rushing on only 17 attempts. Aided of course by Baugh's 55 yarder but still. Great to see.
339 Yards/43 plays....Thats a 500 yards pace.
Lagway makes a huge difference but, I can't help but think about the O line and the running backs. WTF happened in the bye week?
Did these coaches and analysts and support staff and strength and conditioning staff finally realize that if Billy gets fired, they do too!..???

Also, although the defense was very frustrating in the beginning , especially giving up these 3rd and longs, My God, did they flip a switch in the 4th quarter or what???

Normally, the next game will be a huge let down as is the usual for this staff.
Still, at least I will want to take the time and watch the game.

I wouldn't consider an anomaly at all. Score 13 points, set the parking brake in the second and third quarter, try to score in the 4th only if threatened really is peak Retard ball. 300 yards of offense, all in the 1st and 4th quarter.

He just ran into somebody else equally retarded. Someone else willing to play coin toss football.

Don’t forget Gator Nation showing up and helped make the Swamp a place where only Gators get out alive!
If we can do it again next week I believe Napier earned his extra year, Go Gators!

We have more than 2 years of data cementing how bad Karl is but one game, against another badly coached team, and he's suddenly better. People believing this is what scares me the most.

Reality comes crashing back next week. We aren’t beating OM with 300 yards offense and 27 points.

But this was a nice break from the schitfest season, and nice write up as usual Cover.

Another week of "our retard is less of a retard than your retard but our retard is still a retard".

Great write up as usual. Will get around to watching the game sometime today. DJ sounds like an amazing young man who just may save his coaches job.

Also interesting just how close this team is from being 7-3 with a chance to end 9-3, hence my retard comment above.

Great post @cover2 - love the Fetterman line.

I was thinking that Karl is approaching Richt 2.0 territory by winning just enough games to stay employed but I don’t think he is even that good.

Right now all I am hoping for is a win over the clowns

Thanks RR. Big yes to part 1, not so sure about part 2 but looking for a trend nonetheless

@cover2 the Fetterman reference, best quote of the season.

A night where many things went right and I am along with you not settled on one game. This MUST be the trend going forward. Probably the MVP IMO of last night's game the UF DLine. A unit that put 7 Sacks on LSU against an OL that has only surrendered 6 the entire season before last night. BRAVO.

Spot on with DJ and BN keeping him in the pocket. He really had not choice but my point being, we do have a pocket passer. Just imagine when that Hammy is healed. Get him the weapons he needs. Great job, FOR THIS WEEK. Time for BN and this staff to work on making this a habit. I still have my dislikes and reservations about him. The ball is definitely in his court and he has much to make up for.

Two things jumped out at me about this game:

1. Most defenses would wilt at the end being on the field that much. I was astounded how they seemed to actually GAIN strength in the fourth quarter. That's the most relentless we've seen that unit play in God knows how many years. They were animals up front.

2. The crowd was spectacular, awesome from start to finish. Despite being kicked in the teeth for 15 years, they continue to show up and ball out and truly give UF the best home field advantage in the country. So proud of the fans, they deserve better than what they've had to deal with.

Cover2, you have provided another fine episode of "Breakfast with the Gators." Yes, I did watch this game with my ****ty streaming app not failing me. Sunbelt Billy provided a 4 quarter that was not seen in many years. Was I shocked? You know it.
