In one bullet point you so hit the mark and miss it. Miami’s front 7 is legit and one of the best 3-4 we will face. They had 3-4 top 2 round nfl players I those 7 guys and maybe more who will at least be drafted. But, we didn’t attack the safeties much at all so many swing passes and screens. Very little attempts to push downfield and across the middle.

This. Here is why I think we didn’t bother pushing it until urgency set in and why we did not exploit Miami’s safeties.

Mullen called a game covering for our qb more than MIami did for its first time starter.

Granted I was at the game and have not seen TV replay but my gut is this was the worst officiated game since the Swindle. When they threw the flag in the end zone at the end it really seemed like it was "I hope we can justify this" type of call. Thank God they could not. Phantom PF and PI calls were ridiculous. I am so tired fo refs getting away with one sided calls it makes me want to stop following the game. Having said that we will not win 8 games with Felipe as our starter. I really hope that last pick was an audible and Mullen did not call that. Hopefully we get our ****e together before UT. As exciting as the win was at then end it was a pathetic display IMO. We should have won by 30

Nah, we benefited a bunch too. They were only consistent in how bad they were. Both teams were screwed/benefited.

Well I sort of agree and disagree. You can attack the safeties more than throwing post passes and I can think of several times UF attacked their safeties in the passing game.

          1. Perine's TD catch exploited their safeties and confusion in the middle.

          2. The Hammond long catch on the game winning TD drive was attacking the safeties.

          3. The pick where Swain jump and tipped the pass that I think was intended for the deeper receiver was attacking the safeties, it just did not work.

          4. Even Toney's catch and TD run was attacking the safeties as when you throw to a slot receiver that is really attacking the safeties.

          5. Other plays including the late pick may well have been attempts to attack their safeties that just did not work out that way.

Also screens are a way to attack safeties as CBs are usually run out of the play and the screen is often the safety responsibility. I would say more their LBs did an excellent job of protecting their safeties that UF was trying to attack.

That was just scratching the surface of the garbage playcalling.

This is the issue. These are the two plays in the entire game against their weakness.

Yes, the safeties are engaged in other plays, such as boundary we screens, but these are the two plays where we actually threw against their coverage weakness (and no, it’s not just about throwing post plays).

Miami could've been called for holding about a dozen or more times than they did get called. Greenard and Zuniga were either pressuring the QB or getting held.

Actually since Pitts caught three balls the number of times UF attacked the safeties is higher than what I listed. Also the reason to run wide rather than between the tackles is both Miami's strength was inside and running wide is a way to get at safeties. Additionally UF only ran 54 plays counting the fake punt as a play from scrimmage. So I see the game plan of throwing in the middle to the TE and other receivers, throwing to slot receivers and running outside the tackles as trying to get at Miami's safeties. I guess you don't so we probably will just have to disagree on that.

Other than a few decent offensive plays the only good thing about this game was the win. We were not consistent in playing defense and made too many mistakes on both sides of the ball. It is difficult to evaluate since how good Miami might be is a large question. Later in the season this "win" might look pretty good or not. For someone with no dog in the hunt it sure had many exciting plays, way too many with the refs involved.

I can't find the right angle, but that call was one to go for the throat and it was there. Our QB just missed it. It was a fake screen designed to spring our guy down the sidelines if the safety on that side got his eyes fixed on the screen. Even if he doesn't, it puts their weakness on an island against our strength. This is a play call to put the game away. The ball is supposed to go to the guy streaking in the top left. During the live broadcast there was a skycam angle that showed the safety did indeed come down and our receiver was running free at the moment he threw that duck.

Cover, as usual excellent synopsis . For me it was pretty much what I expected. First game against a good opponent with a lot of bad blood between us. Turnovers cost us 10-14 points and almost the game. The last 4 minutes seemed like 4 hours with penalties and Miami doing it's best to give us the ball back. Did they set a single game record for recovering their own fumbles? Not sure if our pass rush is as dominant as it looked or did we take advantage of Miami's weakness? In either case we will know soon and my opinion is that we won't have this type of success against the SEC big boys. But give the coaches credit for attacking the weakness. Some times that doesn't happen. Tackling was terrible especially on the long TD run.
That is coachable and can be corrected. The offense has a lot of work to do. Our play calling again looks predictable, and we don't seem to use our weapons. What happened to Toney?

Bottom line for me. Playing Miami in "week zero" was a big risk but it will benefit us more than some FCS opponent in week 1. Unlike the NFL we don't get a pre season , so the ugliness gets exposed in the first game. We saw it last night and now the coaches get to earn their paychecks for the rest of the season. Against Miami style points are not important. Just beating their ass is the goal. Playing them it is never easy, and being 1-0 is mission accomplished.

We haven't taught our players to tackle yet? Kinda late now isn't it?

I think the lack of a running game was the most concerning thing. We will be in big trouble against the better SEC teams if that doesn't get back to last year levels. Miami has decent DTs but their strength is the DEs and LBs so I thought the push would be a little better.

The O line was not too bad on pass protection in their first game considering the pass rushers Miami has.

Great summary, as usual. The one thing that stood out to me was that, for the first three quarters, the offensive play-calling seems incredibly vanilla to protect an inexperienced offensive line.

Not too late. But telling and showing a guy in practice what he did wrong can't take the place of game film against a good opponent. Now if the kid still makes the same mistakes he may need to sit. Our problem is that with limited depth that could create more issues. We won't know until we play the next game.

Franks is like a latter day Doug Johnson with a bigger mouth and a smaller brain. His antics on the sideline and with the cameras were a joke.

Seems we didn’t go downfield much because Mullen was worried Franks would get pressure and throw up lame duck interceptions, which is exactly what happened in the fourth quarter - so why make that call?

52 yds rushing. Woof. I do think OL will gel though. They could have looked a lot worse for their first game.

Front seven looks pretty good on D apart from a couple breakdowns but I see little to no improvement from the safeties. Atrocious back there.

Townsend and Mullen have balls of brass to run that fake. Mullen wasn’t anywhere close to perfect, but was willing to take enough risks to win.

Cover, you should be the lead sports columnist for the Gainesville Sun, but it would be a pay cut and you make way too much sense. Heck, I certainly hope they don't pay Dooley a whole lot. Maybe seconds at the buffet for a bonus.

                                        1) Officiating was horrendous. Too may stretched blue jersey’s that were no calls.
The 2nd fumble clearly recovered by not 1, but 2 downed Gators and they turn it over?
Admittedly, I didn’t see the no calls against UF for the orange and blue lenses in my glasses.

                                        2) How bad is EJ if he cannot take the job away from Franks?

Gators have 3 weeks to get it figured out or we’re looking at another loss to KY.

I agree, but alas the official never give you a recovered fumble until you have clearly established possession including letting people spear you on the ground. Think back to the G. Warren (I think) fumble recovery in the end zone against FSU many years back.
