Our D lacked any effort once we got the lead. I mean, less than zero. You could have put 11 guys out there from the fraternity team and they would have played better. The EFFORT just wasn't there. A lot of people standing around watching football and not playing.

I have trained to be a HS referee and when I coached, I read the rule book at least 2-3 teams a season EVERY year. I don't claim to be an expert since its been a few years since all this happened, but can ANYONE tell me what the hell was wrong with the block Johnson put on that dude during the called back TD run??? And can someone tell me why Billy Noballs didn't go postal on the refs for the flag and get ejected????

1st - block looked fine as I recall, hands inside the frame, so the only answer can be that a ton of people took MSU and the points and refs were in on it and trying to keep it close enough for us to collapse and let MSU get inside of the points and/or win!

2nd - you answered your own question…”Noballs!”

There is an axiom in reffing that you only call what you SEE and not what you think you see. I have seen blocks that were fine get flagged for blind side block because the sound was loud and/or the blocked player was laid out. I saw it coming and looked at the ref and he didn't see it. He was looking at the ball carrier. Another peeve I have with refs is most of them spend their time watching the game than on their area of assignment, ie, line judge looking in the back field and then watching the ball carrier come around the end instead of seeing the DE getting held.

I may be the reason the Gators are 2-2 on the season!

Game one - I went and worked the concessions at GA Tech and the Gators lost. I have not watched the game.
Game two - I watched the game and the Gators won
Game three - I went to Octoberfest and missed the game and the Gators lost. I have not watched the game.
Game four - I watched the game and the Gators won.

As far as I'm concerned, Billy is doing a great job and the Gators are undefeated.
Small victories, people.

Funny, I'm the opposite.
Watched game 1 and 3 and we lost - terribly.
Couldn't watch 2 and 4 and we won.
For the good of the team, I may never watch another game this season. Or maybe a I do watch, so we can be done with this mess...

Well, could you and @Homer J work together and get this figured out?
You're gonna save UF $26mil if you can.

Three of those teams are good at what we are bad defending, the run. FSU is the only one that can't run worth a schit, but they don't appear to be able to do anything worth a schit.
We are also very bad at defending the pass. Diversification is the key.

I saw X posts after the game. Cowbellers wanting Mullen back.
They were the collecting the money to fire him after that losing season which included a loss to South Alabama. Luckily we bailed them out.

I posted the other angle of that, somewhere. I think in the game thread.

It's a lot clearer from that angle but he made contact to the guys head. Realistically it probably should have been a targeting. I almost feel like they had pity on him and gave him a lesser flag which really didn't apply.

IMO, from that angle, it was pretty clearly shoulder to the head.

I think people get confused and think that targeting requires all of the elements, which is why they were surprised we got a targeting when the player used the top of the helmet to hit the other guy in the butt. It is not just head to head contact which will result in a targeting flag.

Not sure why Montrell went high on that. The rule has been in place for a while. If I'm guessing, I suspect he closed his eyes when he lowered his head. It's hard to see anything with your head down.

Terrible call...the dude was running straight at Johnson to get to where the ball carrier was going and had Johnson in his field of vision for at least 2-3 seconds before contact. Pretty soon the definition of a defenseless player is going to be anyone who may suffer contact with another player from the opposing team

In my opinion if he goes lower, he risks targeting(contacting with his helmet) or an injury to either his shoulder, neck, or the other player's knee.

Looked shoulder to chest to me. His head doesn't immediately snap back like he got hit in the head. Johnson leads with shoulder and turns his head, doesn't launch. IDK. If it were flagged targeting, at least it would have gotten a review. Can't go too low or that is illegal too.

It wasn't called as targeting. It was called as blindside, or crack back, block.
It was neither.
If it was targeting then call it as such.

What about hittin' too hard? We used to laugh about that but now they are calling it! So, we need to beat the refs too!

I think I'll play a more dangerous game this weekend-horseshoes!

Saw this in a JV game last week too. One guy on the field is already built like a college safety (playing OLB) closes in on a tackle from the side and hits his chest to the RB's shoulder. RB went absolutely flying and so did the ball. Flag thrown. No question the foul was "hitting too hard by much bigger and faster player".

As @Bushmaster noted, side judge didn't actually see it as he was avoiding a stalk block hitting him. Just heard it and saw guy flying so he threw the flag on a very clean hit. Notably, back judge with a good view, did not throw a flag (but also did not over rule the call). Poor tackling form, but it did the job.

Montrell's hit is very close to targeting. I see the chest contact argument, but also an upward launch and a head snap. I'd be ok with that penatly called or a no call there.
