24-17. Gators over Ole Miss. Simply put, the crowd at BHG yesterday was a difference maker, reminiscent of the atmosphere that greeted the opposition in the glory days when the Gators were on top and winning SEC and National Championships. While the team of late has had its struggles, it is uplifting to see them perhaps starting to find their way. I personally have vacillated between “what the hell are we doing” to “well it’s about time” as our Gators and Billy Napier have closed the conference portion of the schedule with two victories on an uptick. The “anomaly” of the LSU win last week has given way to “back to back” SEC wins, especially significant when you consider the win yesterday was over the coach many had on their wish list to maybe become the HBC when Napier is finally and mercifully shown the door!

That ship has most likely sailed…or sunk, as the case may be! Billy can breathe again as his team is now bowl-bound with the regular season finale next week in Tallahassee against a 2-win F$U group that has been nothing short of a disaster after their 13-0 regular season record just a year ago. A win would guarantee the Gators’ first winning season under Napier and perhaps help create some needed momentum on the recruiting front, all important since it appears certain that Billy will be at the helm again. No photos, but I’m certain that somewhere Scottie Stricklin is enjoying a post-game soy latte and smiling like the Cheshire Cat!

All the Coach drama and hand-wringing aside, the real story is what has begun taking place on the field with the play and efforts of the team. DJ Lagway, despite limited mobility from the healing hammy, has not disappointed as he’s shown a strong and accurate arm and an ability to run the offense and make good things happen. He’s a leader at the position that we’ve been looking for and certainly pointing toward “generational” if he and the team can continue on this late season upward trajectory. But I’m not so sure that the rise of the defense might not be the bigger story. All that unit has done these last two games is close the deal against two SEC opponents, one who had beaten us five in a row and one who was on track to make the college football playoffs. In both games the defense bent a little but never broke and actually seemed to grow stronger late in the game. The front kept pressure on the opposing QBs, providing pressures and sacks and kept the opponents out of the end zone. That transformation alone is quite remarkable when you consider how badly this group was mauled by Miami, Texas A&M, and Texas earlier.

It would also be almost criminal to not give a shout out to the run game that has come on of late. Baugh and Jackson have stepped up and run effectively and allowed us to control the ball and the offense, especially late in these last few games, but the return of a healthy Montrell Johnson, who ran for 107 and what would be the winning TD out of the Wildcat late in the game, was an offensive difference maker. And along with that you have to give the OL some props. Compared to what they looked like earlier in the season, they are certainly improved.

Personally, I’m still ambivalent regarding Billy and his future at the helm of the Gators. I’ve never felt that the Gators’ HC position should ever be an OJT situation despite what the past 15 years have seemed like. But as I have nothing but my own vicarious opinion, it helps somewhat that we’ve had this late season “surge,” if it can be called that, even though there is still uncertainty hanging in the air. I’ll say this for Billy…even though he’s appeared to have been on the verge, he hasn’t collapsed. So for now, one step at a time appears to be the best thing to do. Beat the Noles, recruit and work the portal with some reasonable efficiency, win the bowl game, and let the future take care of itself. Simple…right?!

On the road yesterday with a busted radio I could only guess what was happening in the Swamp, got home to the best news of the day! Me and my dogs yelling in the kitchen neighbors wondering WTF? GO GATORS - GREAT JOB AGAIN - now turn your fury towards those hated bastids in Dork Shambles!

Great as always C2. The kids have embraced this team and being a Gator, especially the Frosh! So exciting to watch. As for Billy, he needs to hire an OC, STC and carry this book with him like the Bible. His clock management remains well below the level of even a high school coach and there is no excuse. The disfunctional play calling at the end of the first half when we blew a chance to add to our lead and almost gave it back to them with enough time for them to score was idiotic. Hiking the ball with 15 seconds left on the play clock, while leading on the 4th quarter and 5 minutes to go, and giving them an extra minute or more to try and come back (they got it back twice in last minute to have a chance) is inexcusable. Good win Billy and Team but you need to act like a head coach now. Do the work and Make Gators Great Again!

It was a special win against the great offensive genius everyone was clamoring for. I hope all that knob slobbing will cease.

DJ Lagway, despite limited mobility from the healing hammy,
The best thing about DJ is that when he escapes pressure using his legs and then snaps his head back down field and finds someone downfield and picks up 15-30 yards instead of running for 8 yards like so many runners do. That puts a whole different pressure on a defense. That's a much better QB because you can't thwart him just by leaving a spy. No DB can cover a good WR for 8-10 seconds.

Top of the day to you Cover! DJ Superman like ability to complete those 2 throws in 1st half bode well for the future. Nice when all 3 phases of game work together. Thanksgiving meal with Gator family members shall be joyous with Faith & Hope for the future. :headbang:

That's an insult to high school coaches.

You honestly wonder how he could be this bad at being a head coach. You think just being around football for a long time you'd learn these things. He was allegedly a quarterback. Perhaps it's a traumatic brain injury thing.

Mullen had Pasqualoni on staff doing most of the actual game day thinking. We're going to have to find somebody like that. Apparently Billy tried to keep him. That maybe would have been a game changer.

Yeah, Billy could use a little sandpaper to the rough edges for sure. But that’s the nature of the OJT

This feels like being 14 over going into the last two holes— and you birdie both of them. So, right or wrong, you go home feeling pretty good about your game.

Absolutely Law. DJ has a “presence” that not all QBs have at that stage, some never get. It’s like the game has already slowed down in his teenage brain, something that usually takes a lot longer to occur or at least it used to. The kid’s special in a good way.

What a great day. The coffee tastes a little better today while reading bits and pieces.

One step at a time is a good way to put it @cover2 going forward. I feel the same way. One thing that is refreshing that many Gator fans have been used to over the years is a collapse. With what happened earlier in the season many teams would have quit. This team has not. Kudos to all of them and BN. While I still view him with a slanted eye, he gets a good job for today, lots to STILL clean up, but on to the next one, and more to prove.

Good as always Cover. Now we're on to the Nulls. Go Gators.

The most angry I got during the game was when we had a 3rd and 4 to end the game and instead of letting Lagway throw a quick 5-yarder, we handed off up the middle and gave a powerful offense the ball back. It's completely the opposite of the "scared money" mantra and we were lucky it didn't cost us the game. I despise cowardly play-not-to-lose coaching. Despise it. Trust your effing quarterback and END the game.

Good analogy (and one I’m all too familiar with  ).
