I have a bottle of the 10 yo, that i’m saving for a special occasion. But I hear it’s one of the more popular ones due to proof.
Most people go into the Van Winkles thinking they are going to love them. I went into the 12 hoping to hate it because of the blind hype. But I had to eat some crow. But seriously, anything over a $100 is just taking advantage. Lots of better bourbons under $100
New favorite of mine Balvenie Caribbean casks...I used to be a big rum drinker so the rum barrel aging is a nice add to the scotch
My great buy is the Costco scotch...$18 for a handle and is surprisingly solid. With 2 kids now 2 and under I need some good buys now and then so it’s my casual scotch go to
I have a couple go-to stores in South FL for good bourbon. It's a fun pain in the ass, you constantly have to be on the lookout to get stuff at a reasonable price. It gets me out of the house away from the wife and kids for hours at a time.
Thanks for the reccos. If i ever feel like a Whiskey expert, this thread will quickly remind me how much of a novice I actually am.
Most of the ones in boxes are at least half empty, the stuff I try and don’t love tends to stay around a while. Also have a bourbon or tequila tasting at your house, it is amazing what gets left by guests in exchange for wings and charcuterie. Whiskey for the men and beer for the wimps
I had some Elijah Craig 22yr old last time I was in Ky. 134 proof and almost thick. Really good.
I like the Woodford double oak, but The Russell’s 10yr is tough to beat for sipping. Of course I regularly drink the beam varieties so I have no class (but prefer Turkey). Tried the 1792, rather drink beam. Had some Hancock presidential on the Golf course today. Almost too smooth lacking character.
If you can, grab an Angel’s Envy Rye soon. Heard the next batches released will be the first that were barreled after Bacardi bought them. There is no assurance that they will keep finishing in the same rum barrels. May be better or worse, but the original is fantastic so you can’t lose.
As for the OP I think I’d have to put Antique Collection at the top of my list. I don’t think there are any current offerings better than William Larue Weller and George T Stagg is right behind. Limited Edition Four Roses is next in line for me. If you ever have a chance to try the 2012 small batch limited edition it’s amazing. As for daily drinkers I know makers doesn’t get a lot of love but I like the 46. I look for a lot of store picks for mid shelf stuff like eagle rare and Elijah Craig. They’re usually pretty interesting and if you find a good store that knows how to pick em can even be great. Elijah Craig Barrel proof has gotten easier to come by and is a killer deal at around $60. EH Taylor small batch is good for $40. Sorry I didn’t pick just one haha. They’re all so good
