Some recent posts have made me think of this quote from C. S. Lewis.

    Thoughts?

Suppose one reads a story of filthy atrocities in the paper. Then suppose that something turns up suggesting that the story might not be quite true, or not quite so bad as it was made out. Is one's first feeling, 'Thank God, even they aren't quite so bad as that,' or is it a feeling of disappointment, and even a determination to cling to the first story for the sheer pleasure of thinking your enemies are as bad as possible? If it is the second then it is, I am afraid, the first step in a process which, if followed to the end, will make us into devils. You see, one is beginning to wish that black was a little blacker. If we give that wish its head, later on we shall wish to see grey as black, and then to see white itself as black. Finally we shall insist on seeing everything -- God and our friends and ourselves included -- as bad, and not be able to stop doing it: we shall be fixed for ever in a universe of pure hatred.
    C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

That is a wonderful true quote...and one any Democrat will ignore. The word of God has no meaning to those that have abandoned it

Great find, Alex. I think their is plenty of guilt for that to go around. It is like both sides need to one up each other all the time on who is doing the worst thing possible. Like saying all democrats reject God or all republicans worship money at the expense of humanity. Everyday, there are perfect examples of what Lewis was warning us about. And worse, so many of us are slaves to whatever media we follow and it is offered each day there who has committed the newest or worst atrocity in the previous 24 hours or keep rehashing the most recent ones. Thankfully, I live in a small community, and part of a county where I know so many people and interact with real humans each day. Case in point. I left my wallet in the lobby of our small PO today. She called me and said someone turned it in to her. She put into my mailbox for me. If I just read or watched the news to view humanity I think my mindset would be in a terrible place.

Why the heck am i seeing your posts hypocrite? Ignore broken? Normally I dont even see your name. Get lost. You are the worst kind of American. One that talks patriotism and common sense out of one side of your mouth, and supports people that would destory patriotism and common sense out of the other.

Anyone have an idea why im seeing not-a-coach's posts again? Ignore normally makes his name not even appear and there's just a blank spot.

Ah there it goes. Phone for some reason showed it when i opened it, gone again now, just like not-a-coach's brain

I think what Lewis is getting at here is Jesus' teaching that we should love our enemies. Jesus is a hard teacher. We should try to see others for who they are and not automatically hate them because they are different than us. Not hating is a hard thing to do. I fail at it. I don't mean I hate to the extent that I am going to do harm to anyone, but I sure don't love everyone. I don't know if it's possible to do otherwise.

There is something intrinsic in me, and probably in all of us, which leads us to believe that those who are like us, who believe the way we believe, who think the way we think, are the best people who have the best thoughts, who had the best experiences, and so on. But we gain a greater insight into others and ourselves if we can see things from the viewpoint of others who are unlike us. The historian Shelby Foote said that Abraham Lincoln was remarkable because he had this ability, the ability to see the world from the perspective of his enemy.

I learned a long time ago that people who have different views than me are not necessarily stupid or bad people although some undoubtedly are. I am who I am because of when I was born, where I was born, who my parents were, and what experiences in life I have had. Others, who have different views than I do, come to them because of who they are; because of what their experiences were. if they were raised the way I was they would be like me and if I were raised the way they were I would be like them.

There is a simple poem by Rudyard Kipling, yes, Kipling that old colonial racist which is entitled "We and They' which pretty much sums these ideas up.

                  Rudyard Kipling: We and They

                  Father and Mother, and Me,

                  Sister and Auntie say

All the people like us are We,

And every one else is They.

And They live over the sea,

While We live over the way,

But-would you believe it? – They look upon We

As only a sort of They!

                  We eat pork and beef

                  With cow-horn-handled knives.

They who gobble Their rice off a leaf,

                  Are horrified out of Their lives;

While they who live up a tree,

And feast on grubs and clay,

(Isn't it scandalous? ) look upon We

                  As a simply disgusting They!

We shoot birds with a gun.

                  They stick lions with spears.

                  Their full-dress is un-.

We dress up to Our ears.

They like Their friends for tea.

                  We like Our friends to stay;

And, after all that, They look upon We

                  As an utterly ignorant They!

                  We eat kitcheny food.

                  We have doors that latch.

                  They drink milk or blood,

                  Under an open thatch.

                  We have Doctors to fee.

                  They have Wizards to pay.

And (impudent heathen!) They look upon We

                  As a quite impossible They!

                  All good people agree,

                  And all good people say,

All nice people, like Us, are We

And every one else is They:

But if you cross over the sea,

                  Instead of over the way,

You may end by (think of it!) looking on We As only a sort of They!

                    Romans 3:23.

I think that's where I have gone. I'd like to come back but I need to see something to get me on the path.

When a liberal hears of a shooting, do they secretly hope the shooter is a White man wearing a MAGA hat with an AR15 and there are lots of minority victims?

When a conservative hears that a computer got hacked, do they secretly hope it's a Democrat and there's proof that the Russians, Chinese, Iranians, and North Koreans all benefited from the leak?

Why weren't Democrats thrilled that the Mueller investigation revealed no Russia collusion? What were they hoping for? That the President of the United States of America was a foreign agent?

Why do Republicans long for proof that Bill Clinton was having sex with underage girls on Epstein's island?

I'm not self-righteously pointing fingers at others and proclaiming my innocence here. Far from it. I'm guilty too. For me, this is aspirational. It is about striving to be better.

I've often wondered how some people can operate in that manner too...It's got to be a conflicted way of being but it gives light to the saying that "Liberalism is a sickness"....Some people confuse America with whomever is President.

This is all true and everyone in this forum or who politics closely feels this way, to a degree. The inherent result of political tribalism. And if anybody thinks it is limited to liberals they have their head firmly planted in their back sides.

Great book. Interesting story about it: When Lewis was researching for this book, his good friend J.R.R. Tolkien, to whom the book is dedicated, warned him it was dangerous to study the ways of Satan. Tolkien later wove this theme into the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, by the way, was not a fan of this book.

It is rot to equate the the Dems' wrongdoings to Republicans' misdeeds. Those wrongs are nowhere similar in numbers, in degree of harm.

I'm actually worse. I know that I trend in this direction but I am unwilling to bend or compromise because to me, the minute I do, the political enemies will use it to gain higher ground. I always consider them flanking and looking for any advantage. I will say this though. I never hated Bill Clinton or Obama they way the left hates Trump and his voters. I could find some common ground with Clinton on a few policy decisions. Not so much with Obama..maybe his willingness to deport illegals at a decent clip but I never hated either of them. What is coming from the left now to me is "2 minutes to midnight".
