He returned after being fired during the 1976 season, and he left the Dolphins again in 1984 to become head coach at LSU. After three seasons (which included a pair of Sugar Bowl berths), Arnsparger became the A.D. at Florida, eventually bringing Steve Spurrier to Gainesville, and Arnsparger then finished his career with a three-year stint in San Diego from 1992 to 1994.

It's been a tough year for SOS - first Coach Graves and now Bill A.

Hiring SOS was a no brainier. He was also the AD while we suffered NCAA sanctions in football and basketball. He forced the resignation of Norm Sloan and hired Don Devoe. I was never more happy to see an AD leave.
That said....RIP.

Without Arnsbargar, no Spurrier. He was on his way to UT when Arnsbargar talked him into Florida.

In September 1990, the NCAA slapped the Gators with two years' probation for numerous major violations dating back to 1985 under Sloan. The Gators' 1987 and 1988 NCAA Tournament appearances were scrubbed from the books due to Maxwell being retroactively declared ineligible, and Sloan was slapped with a five-year show-cause penalty.

The most severe penalty in the long run, however, was a reduction to 13 total scholarships in 1991-92 and 14 in 1992-93. Draconian as those penalties were, the NCAA said that it would have banned the Gators from postseason play and live television in 1990-91 had Sloan still been coach.

And so Lon Kruger, former head coach at Kansas State, took over the program before the 1990–91 season. He went on to become the greatest coach in college history, thanks to Bill Arnsparger.

Arnsparger (not Arnsbarger) was certainly a notable figure in football both at the college and pro level. He was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins and shaped the "No Name Defense" that was part of the Dolphins' championship teams in the early 1970s. He was the head coach of the LSU Tigers for a couple or years. Arnsparger took over the AD position at Florida at a difficult time. Pretty good resume.
