Mrs. Nalt and I adopted 7 kids from foster care and another that was a "gift" when his birth mother chose our family to adopt him because she liked large families. My oldest is 35 now and the youngest is 16. They have consumed more of my "retirement" income than I really wanted them too so as it stands now, I will have to work up until lunchtime on the day of my funeral.

Thank you for adopting and giving those kids a good home.

Please, continue Obi Wan.

If you're ugly, or just not very charming, and you need something extra to get your foot in the door, you can stick a nail in her tire at the funeral, then when she sees the flat tire, you can swoop in like a hero and fix it for her. This will remind her that she's alone in the world and that she needs a man like you to take care of her. If possible, you should also find out what kind of cologne or aftershave her dead husband preferred (probably Old Spice) and make sure you put enough on so she can smell it while you're changing the tire.

Adopting isn't cheap, but it's so rewarding.

The strategy is simple. You check out the obits for dead husbands who lived in nice neighborhoods, go to the funeral, then sidle up to the new widow. "So you here with somebody?" "Wanna get a drink or sumthin' after?"

So you're moving to The Villages, got it.

On a side note, watch out for those pesky STD's.

You are right, it ain't cheap. As for the "rewarding" part, of the 7 foster kids we adopted, only one has been what we would consider rewarding. Three are basically estranged from us now with another on the verge, one has reported us to DHR three times for bogus things and even told them that Mrs. Nalt has mental issues, and a couple of them are "call when they want something" status at this point. Our middle daughter, now 28, is the only responsible one and even she has basically turned her back on the other kids because they tend to just want $$ from her whenever they contact her.

I am an adoptive father, my in-laws are, and a few of our friends... I got luckily with mine... my in-laws youngest has issues due to what happened to her pre-removal from bio parents (abuse, and a friend of ours had to "return" one after he tried to kill his bio sister (they had 8 total).

All seven foster kids we adopted came with a certain amount of emotional baggage. The middle daughter is the only one that found effective coping mechanisms. Kudos to you, your in-laws and friends. Adopting those kids isn't easy and frequently very unrewarding. That your experience has been is absolutely great and I applaud you and your wife. But you and I both know that it isn't about y'all, it's the kids. There really are some foster kids out there that truly want a forever home and are able to find the love they need. We have known some but most are just out for what they can get right now...

I bet your middle daughter is the one that’s name after me. :proud:

Nope! Sorry. She is one of them who are estranged from us. The middle one's name is Kyeland Krystal H.
:sadnanner:

Hope you can restore your relationship with them one day. Regardless, you and your wife are good people and maybe your kids will realize what you tried to do.

I hope so too, but I can’t help but think of this Mark Twain quote: “If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.”
