Have you ever been in an ice storm before? This is headed our way - yay me! These can be as devastating as hurricane except it's cold.

My final year in college we got hit with one that was like 4-5” of ice. Craziest thing I’ve ever seen. We had to use our big tub used to hold kegs/ice and filled it up in the bathtub full of hot water to dump on our cars to melt it. Took about 20+ loads and 5 broken ice scrapers later and we could get in our cars...but then couldn’t get out of the parking space

Park your cars in your garage. Make a brine, water and melted salt, mixture and pour it on your driveway a head of time so it can soak in and not freeze.

Hadn't heard about the brine mixture but it makes sense. I put down cardboard on the grass for the dogs so I can pull it up later for them to pee on.

We won't be leaving the house for a few days. Trees/limbs usually fall across our road so we will be trapped anyway. Last big one left us without power for a week. Meh

Sounds awful.

Here's a good read about brine. The NDOT uses here and sprays the roads down before a big storm comes in. They don't salt the roads, but use this mixture. As soon as you cross over to California they make you chain up.

When I was 8 years old a really bad ice storm hit. We were without power for over a week. Some people in town we're without power for 3 or 4 weeks. Everything froze and just stayed frozen. I remember a lot of playground equipment at the park broke, and several trees lost big limbs, many of which fell on power lines.

But as a kid, I enjoyed not going to school and sledding most days so it wasn't so bad. I'm sure my parents' perspective is much worse.

I've only driven on ice one time, it was terrifying!

Stay warm...

Lost power shortly after 5am so that’s better than expected. Fewer trees and limbs down than expected so that’s good but wind gusts are going to 15mph today. Road seems to be clear too. Inside is down to lower 60’s for now. Hoping power comes on soon but suspect it will be a day. ice is gorgeous though.

It’s always been the plan to move out of the ice and closer to the beach when the kids graduate. Looking at SC or back to FL. Trying to put as much sweat equity into the house as possible for resale.

OOOOF!! We got ice all day here in DC yesterday - most of it melted today, thankfully.
