retainers for several lawyers. Multiple for estate and trusts and tax. They won't know each other and this way I have someone watching someone, without the others knowing who is who. As I receive documents, I'll have several looks with know collusion.

You’ve really put some thought into this. It was more of a whimsical thread.

Gotta put the work in up front before you can say fuch off to the world.

Another thing I'd do is...everything in my power that no one knew I had money. As someone said, you can rent nice things, like a Ferrari, fancy house, and a pornstar for a week. You don't need to buy them long-term.

I always thought it'd be fun to Air BnB up and down the country. Just spend a week or two in a place and then drive North or South to the next town. Over the years move East to West. But atleast do the East Coast: Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington/outerbanks, etc

I like the Air BnB plan! We had a travel trailer and during the summer we would go to places that we normally wouldn't go if we were in a hotel with the kids. Sold the trailer last summer but hoping to do Yellowstone one day. Owning a beach house sounds great but I like the diversity in renting.

Donated 5% of my paycheck for about a decade to the Hope Lodge when I was for working for WD in the 80s and 90s. I think I did about $10 a week early on and then talked to some folks that spent almost 3 months there while their little girl was being treated. Got a 5% raise soon after and gave it all to the Hope Lodge until I left about 10 years later. Great charity IMO.

I want to personally thank you for your benevolence toward Hope Lodge and it’s residents. I was blessed to be able to spend three weeks at the Gainesville HL just after a stem cell transplant. When I was discharged, I still had to go back to Shands each day for labs and doctor visits and the lodge was just a couple blocks down the street. I was lucky a room was available for my wife and me. It was comfortable and there was a kitchen area that we prepared some meals and got to visit with other patients. It was there that I realized that when you think you’ve got it rough, you don’t have to look very far to find somebody who’s got it worse. But it truly is a place that inspires “hope.” About the only negative about my stay there was that our Gators, with Zunino and Co. flamed out in the CWS:)! It was hard to feel too down since the care givers and other patients helped get me ready to go home and start the rest of my life with a new perspective. If you’re looking for a charity, I’d highly recommend the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge.

Thats exactly why I did it! Helps great folks like you and your family during one of the toughest times of their lives. I’m generally a prick, but hearing how grateful those folks were while dealing with such a tough time with their little girl motivated me to help in some way.

Back Alley pretty much nailed it. Since the title is "FIRST purchase," this is my vote... specifically in the Blue Ridge Mountains maybe the Smokeys, overlooking a lake, possibly stretching all the way down to the waterfront to include a lake house with big dock and boat for fun (though the lake stuff is likely a separate 2nd purchase).

Note: this first purchase dream of mine involves 2 main elements: an awesome place for family to visit; and a barn I renovate to become a killer woodworking shop with all the man tools imaginable, including a sawmill.

Hat tip to @NOLAGATOR for mentioning giving back to God. I definitely have some philanthropic ideas in this unlikely dream, both Christian- and veteran-centric. Taking over the UAA would be a project to work on within the first 2 years.

Thanks to the Coastie... Just remember, you can't give back to God what is already HIS.

I worked in a building in WP once that had a firm on an entire floor that did nothing but convert lottery winners from their current pay arrangement(all upfront or monthly). I would run into some of the brokers at times and it was amazing to hear them tell the various ways they’d try to reach the winners. Apparently the lotto people basically tell you to disconnect from the world immediately, to make it harder to be contacted. But they had all these different strategies like studying the neighbors activities for weeks(not even exactly sure how) and then sending packages those people packages to be delivered at a time when they wouldn’t be home, with a note that leaving at the neighbor was acceptable. When UPS/FedEx would deliver, they’d ask for a number and then they somehow managed to get it from the records. It was insane, but apparently it was lucrative enough that it necessitated an entire company that did nothing else. Ironically, a large portion of winners would eventually end up moving to within about 10 miles of there, at a neighborhood called Ballen Isle. Then, almost like clockwork, their lives would completely derail.

To your other post about keeping the attorneys separate, unfortunately it’s been my experience that they all know each other. Nothing more comforting than riding up the elevator at the SEC office in Miami with your counsel, as he chats with someone he’s friends with, and who just happens to be on the other side of things trying to fine you. So much fun.
