Is Golf going to Die?

That's sad news about all those layoffs.

It's Bush's fault!

Golf will never die out. 90% of Corporate decisions are made on Golf Courses.

Golf will never die but i can see why some give it up...it can take a long time to play and it can be very expensive to play.

I bet Paddy wish you had quit years ago.

The reason why I don't play very often is because it costs so much. The courses where I live are very over priced. I don't think golf will ever die, but I'm not surprised by the decline.

"die" no. but I think so many people saw Tiger play so effortlessly went out to learn the game and 10 years later still suck, so they gave up.

That's exactly why i don't play...i grew up on a golf course and damn it was nice when dad was footing the bill...and even though it was a pretty nice course it was very reasonably priced and still is. But moving to a large city all of the courses (even the ****ty ones) are way over priced. Now i only play about 5-6 times a year.

Well if people quit, then the prices will come down, I would think.

Same here. Used to play at least once a week and loved it. But between the expense, time constraints and just plain not enjoying it anymore, I only play once a year and that's an annual 4-man Scramble that doesn't cost me anything to play in and provides all the free beer you can drink.

Ditto. Costs have taken away a lot of the fun. The Judge Smails types are finally getting what they want I suppose.

I used to play several times a week when I was in the Navy and could play on the base courses for really reasonable fees. After an injury to my thumb, and my bad back becoming too much to deal with I had to quit. I'm sure if I'd been physically able after retiring, the cost would have greatly affected my playing as well.

No industry grows forever. Watched a story on Real Sports with Bryant Gumble last night and was shocked at the decline in rounds played and the number of course closings since 2008. Because of the expense in getting the equipment, the cost of playing, and the amount of time it takes to play, our instant gratification society seems less interested. They also coupled the growth and decline of golf directly to Eldrick Woods...indicating the game needs a new dynamic hero to stir the masses. Frankly, I think the cost and time to play are the overriding factors. They did show one place where you can eat, drink, and hit balls at targets on the range...score points and win prizes. It actually looked like fun and I think I would do something like that periodically...kind of a Dave and Busters driving range.

I heard of a place like that in Chicago and have heard that there are more places like that opening. From the friends of mine that have gone they all said it was a blast...even the ones that never play golf.

that being said I grew up with it and love it and if the price is not much beats a nice day on the course.

Well, I've got a set of clubs for sale.

My wife won't hardly let me play anymore she was tired of getting ****t faced twice. A week and gambling away the rent out there. Seriously it's too damn expensive in the winters here in Florida and too damn hot in the summer when they lower the prices.
