I mentioned this last year. I fault White for throwing his hands up and not dealing with it last season. Remember White's constant "hero ball" comments in the post game? Our young guys don't seem interested in that kind of basketball. Nemhard, KJ, Stokes, Ballard, and Locke are rough riders who are smart and team oriented. Hudson doesn't fit at all.

White needs to send Hudson to a sports psychologist. You can read his face on the bench and see that it is painful for him to not be contributing, but his lack of effort and focus in games and in practice are sabotaging him.

Solid idea. I suspect the team works with some of the faculty shrinks. Up your post count, by the way

Sports psychologist. :snicker: How about the bench with a memo to show up or shut up.

PC has hit the sports world.

Donovan used Spencer Woods before the 2010 season. White used him before the 2016 season. Maybe it's worth going to the well for Jalen one more time.

Maybe if we installed a nap pod at the end of the bench?

I think you guys are missing the obvious. The guy has pussy problems. He was on his way to going league, being a pro. Comes back for one last hurrah. The chicks are on notice. The Tinder is on speed dial.

Don’t you remember Rocky..... “women weaken legs.”

Dude needs to remain celibate for the remainder of the season. Problem fixed.

At some point the dude has to own his own game by deciding how bad he wants it. If he wants an NBA dream to happen he'll have to make it happen with unwavering focus like Udonis Haslem because his talent alone won't take him any farther. A sports psychologist is therefore only going to be able to make so much of a difference at this point.

As no1g8r pointed out UF has used one in the past, I think for shooting problems, particularly FT shooting problems. So a sports psychologist might be able to help Hudson quit pressing and start making shots again. On the other hand a 78 and others suggest a sports psychologist is unlikely to help Hudson quit moping and give better effort. Only Hudson can decide that. There is no mental block with defense, you just need to stay focused and try.

White is helping Jalen get over the hump by giving him opportunities that Jalen can't (or won't) capitalize on.

He needs to want to play defense and let defensive effort feed his offensive rhythm. Compare Ballard and Hudson's box score stats from the last game. Why with the same O production did Ballard get more minutes? Defensive effort and intensity.

This "no defense" mentality is a direct result of the popularity of the youtube highlight. Lock down defense doesn't get on the highlight films, but it does win games. I know HS team coaches deal with this regularly.

The best place for Hudson is right where he is - on the bench as a living example of what will happen to a Pre-Season All-SEC player that doesn't go "all-in."

That is a really great summary of the situation! I truly appreciate that White has the clarity of purpose for his team's identity to set that example.

After going back and watching some of Jalen's play this year, recalling Jalen's play from last year, and reading some of Coach White's comments about Jalen, I've come to the conclusion that Jalen is all about Jalen, and not about the team. He isn't playing sound defense, he isn't blocking out, he isn't rebounding. Apparently he isn't showing any better in practice than he is in games.

If that's the case, then I agree with Mike White's approach. If Jalen isn't getting it done in practice, he rides the pine until he's willing to give his all to the team, first in practice, then in games.

A sports psychologist is good at calming down someone's mind who is "trying too hard", and helping with mental toughness. Jalen may have other factors that are causing self-defeating behaviors, in which case cognitive behavioral therapy might help him turn it around in fairly short order.

Or it could be that Jalen is just lazy, in which case he's doomed to ride the pine this year, spend a few months in Europe before being cut, at which point basketball will be completely off the table for him and he'll be forced to do something else.

Exactly! As with any large life endeavor, it all starts and ends with 'want to'. If he doesn't have the drive no amount of support from coaching, therapy or anything else is going to make much difference. His play this year has reflected that too.

A great comparison can be made with Kevaughn Allen who has also been very sluggish on offense starting out this year. Allen was pressing somewhat on offense to start the season though that's been improving of late. However, even as he's struggled on offense, his intensity on defense has been stellar and he's also much improved as a ball handler and distributor. He is therefore getting the kind of minutes you'd expect for a 4 year starter because even as he's struggled he's still been leading by example for all the young players. Contrast that with Hudson who also seems to be pressing on offense and every other aspect of his game. Unlike Allen, however, all of his efforts are very personally focused so his performances are increasingly out of synch with the rest of the team. Against WVU his play was so bad that he didn't even look like he was aware of the overall game plan. I didn't look it up but his +/- must have been at the lowest possible value! At the beginning of the game I was really pulling for him but after his performance in the first half, which was actually killing the team's momentum, I was glad to see him planted on the bench where he clearly belonged for most of the second half.

As I said in an earlier post, I think he has a very limited window left to decide he wants to be a part of this team and make that the priority. If that doesn't happen by the end of this month then I think White owes it to the rest of the team to plant him at the end of the bench once the SEC season starts to show that playing at UF is a 2-way commitment even for a returning senior with NBA aspirations who led the team in scoring the year before. It's up to Hudson whether his legacy is just as a transfer mercenary who had pretty good statistical production during a transitional season year or as someone who helped to build the foundation for White's new team culture. I wish I was more hopeful for about that outcome.

I do really like the fact that White is showing he has the leadership chops to be up to the challenge of dealing with this situation. I also like the fact that all his new highly rated recruits are so mentally focused on our overall team first, defense driven mentality. Given the ratings on the class coming in next year, if they follow the same trend of team first character then the future is very bright indeed!

Our community sprung up when the Gatorsports message board was shut down in the summer of 2014. We pride ourselves on offering Gator-biased, yet critical discussion among people of all different backgrounds. We are working every day to make sure our community is the best Gator message board you will find.
