A furious Jon Stewart tells Congress to support 9/11 first responders: 'It's an embarrassment'

Both Republicans and Democrats dishonored these first responders. Shameful.

      Drain the swamp!
They prolly had much more important things to attend to - like lunch with lobbyists.

No offense, but why do veterans get a small $6k burial and generally a year of their pitiful below poverty level (or welfare benefits in some states) salary if they managed to afford the SGLI insurance instead of feeding their kids....

But people from NY get 2-7 million?

Keep in mind these policemen and fire fighters ARE still getting their regular 70-100% retirements plus benefits plus likely disability too.

        When is it enough?

Apparently never if it is NY or PR.

My son is a fireman. I am in awe of the heroism and dedication exhibited on that terrible day.

But there have to be limits to and consistency regarding compensation in these events.

Still, there's NO excuse for being AWOL at an event like this.

Only 2 people were absent: Eric Swalwell, D-Calif and Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa.

Congress didn't pass the bill on the first try but four years ago allotted $7.4 billion to last through 2020. But there were so many claims — from 22,000 people who got sick after serving at ground zero — that the money has almost run out and earlier this year payouts started getting slashed in half.

The cuts, effective this month, follow an increase in new claims from those who have become sick after working or living near attack sites in the months following the catastrophic events that killed 2,996 people and injured another 6,000. The fund has now paid out about $5 billion of its available $7.3 billion to more than 20,000 victims and currently faces a backlog of 19,000 unpaid claims.

I'd guess that this specific issue has become a monetary welfare based solely on politics. Not to say that some involved or victims aren't legit, but I begin to question motives when I see certain causes championed for more funds, when other causes are completely neglected.

Lines and limits have to be drawn.

You can never end all suffering. Channel the anger and resources in attempt to prevent 911 from happening again.

First off, I am 100% down for any verbal lashing handed out to any member of congress.

But why didnt Stewart and his crew request a dollar amount for what they needed? All I heard was "more and not enough".

Why not say "We need $7B more and that should do it"?

There is some SERIOUS waste happening with that original 7B.

In a now-deleted tweet, New York Times writer Wajahat Ali wrote: "Anytime a Republican says they are 'patriots' ask them if they voted to fund the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund. You know who's for it? Ilhan Omar. You know who hasn't sponsored it? Dan Crenshaw. @DanCrenshawTX, I hope you do the right thing. If not, why aren't you?"

Crenshaw responded by writing: "Hey 'journalist,' maybe you should check your facts. I am a co-sponsor. Nice try though."

Brad gets it. I'm all for lambasting congress every day of the week, and I'd like to believe John Stewart was sincere in his intentions, but the fact is only 2 people were absent from the hearing. It's a hearing about a bill, its not a full congressional meeting or floor vote where you have all 300+ members present and accounted for. It's a committee hearing that takes place in a separate chamber in the capitol. Either Stewart is very ignorant on congressional procedure matters, or he's grandstanding. Truthfully, neither would surprise me. Brad's also correct in that the initial allotment has been grossly abused by a multitude of groups. Some oversight is needed if we are to refill the pot.

Maybe because Stewart is a pompous ass who likes to grandstand? That would be my guess anyway.....

Sounds like Patrick Ewing's quote in the late 90's during the NBA lockout.

Good. Let her talk. Just like Obama talking, every time she does, their numbers go down and ours go up.
