Yeah, he's really getting off to a good start. I predict he'll have them on probation within 2 years.

Diaz may or may not turn Miami's program around, but it seems if you want a forced early retirement, just coach at the University of Miami.

There was the same response in a similar article in “The Athletic.”

If he wants loyalty, maybe win a game first?

My dream in HS was to just get an OFFER to try out at UF. I got the letter in January 1987 from Galen Hall. Come on down and try to make the team!! My career was done at that point. I got a few offers from Troy State, Miss State Gulf Coast, Maryville (next to UT), and such. Could have played about anywhere on the D2 level I believe.

My first game was UF v. UT in 1985. I think Neil Anderson ran in the game winner. I was in the endzone with my HS team to watch it happen. Some of the seniors on that team got sideline passes for that one. We got to practice on the field prior to our game that week. Astroturf sucks. I got to meet several OL that Thursday. They all looked like oak trees at 6'4 280 plus. I was 6'3 215 but carry 260 very well (now). I knew UF was never going to happen.

I say this to make this point. If I was offered a full ride to my dream school, I would still take my visits. I would go to Notre Dame, USCw, LSU, Oklahoma, and UF. I would do unofficials to Auburn and Bama because they were close enough to drive for the weekend. I would want to see those places and make the most informed decision possible.

I would have still signed with UF though.

This stems from his time with Mack Brown. That was a big part of Texas recruiting—commit early and stick. If I recall correctly, a recruit that visited elsewhere was dropped as a commit.

I think Swinney is the same way. But as has been mentioned, you bailed on your team as soon as something better(more desperate) came along and have yet to win a game. Probably not the time to go all dictatorial.

Official visits are fun as hell, I don’t begrudge any kid who wants to use all of his up.

The reality is that while most of us say we would love to have played for our dream school, it's not always the best decision. (Not saying this means you.) For example if my son had been the top QB in the nation last year and Clemson was his dream school, would it really have been in his best interest to go there and ride the pine for at least two seasons? Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes the school you love could be in a bad place at that time - who here would want their kid to play for Butters? Last year one of my son's HS classmates committed to his dream school very early in the process. As things moved along he realized that he had committed as a fan and not necessarily because it was a good fit for him. In the end he de-committed and ultimately signed with a school with a much better academic environment (he was a very good student) where he felt it was a better fit. Also, unless a kid is a top recruit, he might commit only to get processed despite his loyalty to his dream school. If it happens late enough in the process, he might miss out on a school that would have fit him better, but now no longer has a scholly available.
Had either of my kids been recruited for a sport, I would have encouraged them to look around as much as possible and take all their official visits and gather as much information as possible. And like you I would have taken them on unofficials to any school within a 3-4 hour drive. While I sure would have loved for my kids to get full rides to college - and it would have been fun to go to games - I am in many ways happy they never went through that process. (It was stressful enough as it was!) I'm cool with rooting the Perine's son, the Jefferson's son, the Heggie's son, etc.

I'd be curious to hear what he says to the kid down the road who commits and is loyal, but Diaz decides he has to "process" because a 5* wants to commit at that position and there ain't room for both.

Dream school stuff is stupid. I don’t begrudge any kid from choosing the school they think suits them best. I grew up an Auburn fan - would’ve been a 3rd gen alum - but Florida made more sense in every way. Decided not to go with my “dream school” but did get to see 3 national championships while I was there. Couldn’t be happier with my decision.

The best part is the people scolding us for criticizing Diaz because "We don't really know the whole story."

                  What is there to know?
Diaz took a job and gave his new employer his word and his signature. He then got a better offer and changed his mind.
Now he will not allow recruits the same autonomy that he enjoyed.

I repeat, what is there to know?

I think this post may cause Ox to tweak :stirpot:. Also, if you saw 3 Natty's I can only guess we are around the same age. Only, I went off to play small school basketball for a year and didn't get to UF until law school. If I had gone, I would have started in time for both basketball and the last two football natty's.

I was there 03-07 for undergrad. Heck of a party. Still contend the party was wildest after CBB’s 1st NC - town was starved for it and the players were so relatable. Football almost came out of nowhere - my friends and I were in shock. University was crazy for both though. Kegs in the street, etc.

I think they use the smoke so they can’t see that there’s no one in the stands when they run onto the field.
