I remember reading a few articles when McElwain first got to CSU and the roster was depleted of lineman (sound familiar?). He put out a call for walk-on OL/DL and also brought in a couple of 5th year graduate transfers. He went 4-8 his first year w/ a tremendously weak roster. After reading what he walked into, he really turned that program around quickly.

Your football team might be in a jam if at the start of spring practice, instead of looking AT new players you are looking FOR new players. For Colorado State football, that is – unfortunately – where they are. Head coach Jim McElwain needs lineman. Badly.

The Rams, a team not known for football, is desperate for lineman. McElwain only has one requirement: You’re a student.

Newest Rams -- With the beginning of school comes the addition of walk-ons to the football team, and McElwain welcomed in seven new players -- one the team has been waiting on.
Calvin Tonga, a junior college transfer, finally had enough of his paperwork clear through the proper channels to be on the field. The 6-foot-3, 320-pound defensive lineman will be in pads today, but he's not ready to just jump in and help. McElwain said it will be more than likely three to four weeks before there's a chance.

"We're glad he's here, and he'll obviously add depth to a position where we all know we're a little thin," McElwain said.

The others were walk-ons, with more on the way. One, defensive back Kyle Chefferley, was with the team in the spring. The others are quarterback Christian Boese; defensive backs Jared Chirico and Brandon Henrie; and wide outs Tyler Clark and Tyler Nelson. All but Boese (Texas) are from Colorado.
Chuck Ragland will not be with the team, and the rumored arrival of Jaleel Awini is not taking place it appears with the first day of school starting. McElwain feels the Title IX numbers will allow the roster to reach into the 115-118 range, which he hopes to accomplish.

-----

This article discussed his approach and the changes he brought to CSU when he got there.

t's no surprise that the new CSU coach is borrowing heavily from what he learned there while working for Nick Saban.

McElwain insists that his players keep their lockers neat and orderly, wear the same color socks and keep their jerseys tucked in during practices and look out for each other as if they were brothers, both on and off the field. He created a 16-class mental conditioning program with a Colorado State University doctoral candidate that is modeled after the ones IMG runs at Alabama and a handful of other powerhouse college football programs.

McElwain is also stocking practices with additional coaches and staff, closing practice to the press and public, and prohibiting players and assistant coaches from talking to the media -- all rules adopted from Saban.

You know one thing I like about McElwain is that he was at a big SEC national championship program, Alabama, while he was the offensive coordinator, but he went to smaller program in the middle of nowhere and took what he learned and built a solid program. He didn't go to Fort Collins and bemoan the fact that he didn't have this or have that like he did in Tuscaloosa. He didn't downgrade the players or what he was handed in terms of facilities, fan support, tradition. He just rolled up his sleeves and went to work.

Not sure this is special. What new coach doesn't do this as well?

As usual, NV says it all and only left out the question on a 25,000 plus campus, can we find a walkon or two?

Unfortunately that probably won't work for an SEC offensive lineman. Not everything you do at CSU will work at UF. Fortunately he'll have an easier time recruiting JUCO guys.

^^ This. He's not at CSU anymore. He's at UF where kids WANT to transfer to. Any JUCO or player looking to transfer will gladly welcome him to come interview them. A scholarship to play for UF carries a lot of weight for kids like this. We missed on a lot of offensive talent over the past few years because it was obvious even to the kids that Will Muschamp didn't like high power offenses. Offensive players want to be where they can get attention. Big Mac brings that element of recruiting back to UF.

If you watch the CSU game film you'll note many on the OL are freshmen, sophomores, and JUCO players. They play awesome. That's pure coaching. Something we haven't seen in a while.

I don't know if JUCO is the route we should be taking....but w/ the recruiting holes we have I think it will be a necessity. We can't count on true freshman to come right in and perform right away in every case. Sure, there are players here and there that can do it...but routinely, in the SEC, that's not going to happen.

I'd like to see us bring in at least 2 JUCO OLs and a JUCO TE & LB. Four in one class is a lot, but the holes Muschamp left us with need to be filled by something other than true freshman.

McElwain did a good job filling his needs at CSU to improve each season. I hope he can find some talent to fill our needs to improve on 6-5....

They also play in the WAC or WACJr. You can get by with walkons and freshmen in that conference.

That's a whole different world than the SEC.

Yup, I was only meaning his ability to take a 2* and make them play higher, even at a WAC school. We couldn't make 4* players play like 4*s!

If Mac can get some O lineman in this class that can play next year then our improvement will be better than his 1st year at CSU
