Urban Meyer names his choice for college football’s best atmosphere

In over three decades of coaching college football, Urban Meyer visited many of the best atmospheres in college football. Meyer and fellow FOX analysts Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush were recently asked to name the best atmosphere in college football. Meyer named a place he used to call home: Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

“Steve Spurrier, when they built The Swamp in the 90s, it’s very hot,” Meyer said. “Gainesville is obviously right in the center of the state. Not a whole lot of air circulates in the center of the state of Florida, especially early in the season. It is so hot. Only Gators get out alive, is what Steve Spurrier said. The fans, the student body is incredible. The fans are out of their damn minds. When we had that thing going, a night game in The Swamp was second to none.”

Well he is not wrong on this. As SOS once said, "The Gators have the best fans in the world!"

Wonder if he'd say the same thing about the students today? Sigh... I do miss the days when "Only Gators got out alive" and a home game was as close to certain victory as one could get...

Swamp wasn't built in the 90's, brah.

The Swamp didn't become the Swamp until we closed the open end of the horseshoe (the "new" North Endzone opened for business in 1991) which made it bigger, hotter, and much, much louder...and when the HBC christened it the "Swamp" (in 1992).

It was the toughest, loudest place to play in college football, the best home field advantage in the country, and we loved it, we reveled in it.

Between 1990 and 1998 (inclusive), we only lost twice in the Swamp and both of those were close games.

Yeah, those 15000 empty seats on the student’s side make for a great atmosphere. Time for all the eggheads to pull their noses out of the books for a few hours on Saturday and show up and make some noise.

With Sumo Wrestling on TV? Fat chance.
