Here are ‘The Animals’ on the Ed Sullivan Show, Feb 6, 1966. For their time, The Animals were ‘counter-culture’, yet they hadn’t transcended matching houndstooth suits and turtle-necks yet.
Many in Sullivan’s audience weren’t quite ready for The Animals. The young chicks seem to dig it (check out those cat-eye glasses!). As the lyrics rolled out
“In this dirty old part of the city
Where the sun refuse to shine
People tell me there ain't no use in trying...
Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due...
