The same existed with Reagan, except back then the derangement was thinly veiled with some civility. That's all gone these days, and the true colors show through.
That letter was virtual prison rape. Sounded like ox or donkey wrote it, or maybe even alex.
I think the difference is internet / social media which has been a force multiplier for whichever camp one follows, making things more contentious. When mainstream media was all you had, they had a monopoly on what 'news' was disseminated--mainly a liberal point of view without much organized counterpoint. With more competition from conservative sources in the last 20 years, the left--in a struggle for hearts and minds-- increasingly contrives ever more absurd premises, trying to counter the conservative points being offered. Tip O'Neill July 1984 about R.R... "The evil is in the White House at the present time. And that evil is a man who has no care and no concern for the working class of America and the future generations of America, and who likes to ride a horse. He's cold. He's mean. He's got ice water for blood." 1983: “He only works three to three-and-a-half hours a day. He doesn’t do his homework. He doesn’t read his briefing papers. It’s sinful that this man is president of the United States.” There's a popular notion (advanced by Chris Matthews and others, mainly to impugn DJT) that O'Neill and Reagan were friends. They were not. They could be civil and cordial at times, but that was owing to Reagan's genial nature. Liberals should admit Tip O'Neill was Reagan's bitter enemy, not his friend
