Myrtle Beach's heyday was its beach music scene in the 60's with groups like The Swingin' Medallions and Bill Deal and the Rhondels. I had no idea those guys were white listening to them on the radio.

Absolutely, and those old Beach Bands are still hanging around the area.
"Chairman of the board", The Catalina's, The Embers, The Tams...etc.
Anyone that knows what "Beach Music" is, would Also know what "Shag Dancing" is.

One of these guys daddy bought them a restaurant/bar in PC Beach and turned it into a club called the Old Hickory…they were the house band there all summer for several years around 1966…competed with the famous Old Dutch Inn.

Always wondered about Edisto Beach.
I drive right past there on the way to Myrtle Beach.
Is that a State Park or are there Public Campgrounds around?
Are there any Restaurants , or any sort of fun things to do there?
Often wondered about that one....
The campground we stayed at was a state park and it was a short walk to the beach. We did a few nature things around Edisto but it wasn't much on entertainment. It's all about the beach, same with Emerald Isle and Pawley's Island area.

Truthfully it depends on how much you value a nice expansive quiet beach over restaurants and entertainment. Obviously you have no friends so.... :stickpoke:

Maybe MB is what you (or wife/kids) are looking for if you aren't staying at the beach all day.
It sounds like Iron and Bush have a lot of experience in the area.

Gotcha.
My sister had a place in Garden City for a few years. Place was on a tidal creek, with a big ol' deck and lots of shade. It flooded during the Hurricane a couple years back.

We would ride golf carts to the beach and pier.
I liked that area a lot.

The Pier had TWO live bands every Friday and Saturday night.
There are A couple of good bars, a couple of good Restaurants and a sports bar. What more could a guy ask for?
Plus, a short Golf cart ride to a Kroger and beach store, bars and Restaurants on 17.

The beaches weren't too crowded except for obvious holiday weekends.

Just in between Surfside Beach and Murrels Inlet.

My apologies, when I replied I thought I was answering No Friends so some of it probably sounded odd.

So what we’ve derived from this thread is that where you’re going is as if Ohio and Kissimmee had a kid and left it to be raised by their trash friend, Daytona. The best places to stay vary by posters’ opinions, but all have one central theme—they’re not there. You’re better off keeping an eye out for a Long John Silvers if you want seafood. And a guy from Alabama thinks it sucks. Think that covers it.

Anyway, most importantly, have fun and post lots of pics.

The most important thing I left out is during the summer, over half the cars you see have Ohio license plates. I swear every person from Ohio vacations in the MB area.

Even better. If you’ve never sat at a bar next to a couple of sunburned yinzer‘s in cargo shorts talking about how much they love “guac”, you haven’t lived.

Siesta Key gets its fair share of Ohioans over the summer. Beer guts, sunburned skin the shade of cooked lobster, and cargo shorts abound.

Yeah I have that where I live, not really looking for more of the same. Also, I'll be up that way near the Carolinas, so was looking for something around there. Could go as far north as Virginia, though.
Just head here this weekend. "Pensacon" is this weekend, there will be all kindsa freaky/strange

When I was a kid,my family vacationed every year, at Myrtle Beach. When I graduated High School, that's where all graduates went, Myrtle Beach. When I was working in the Cotton Mills, the plants all closed for a week at July 4th and a week at Christmas, everyone went to Myrtle Beach.

For over 30 years, we had a family vacation spot inside Ocean Lakes Campground. We went there at least two weeks every year.
I have a rental lined up there for Spring Break with my granddaughter in April.

I do like the Southern end and Murrells Inlet a lot better. The Northern end and Barefoot landing, Broadway at the beach, is great for those who like the shopping and Restaurants. I stay out of Myrtle Beach proper. Its a **** hole now. Years of Liberal Local Government ran out the money. Myrtle Beach itself is touristy and like Daytona Beach lite. But looks like years of neglect. There was at one time, quite a few areas to enjoy "downtown". "The Bowery" is where the Country Band Alabama got it's start. I actually saw them there in 1976. Cool little bar, but, Not worth a trip downtown to see it. In fact, I'm not sure it's still open.

Myrtle, To me, Is more Family oriented with a little risque stuff there for the adults on the outskirts. Plenty of Adult Entertainment to be found, Much like Daytona.
If you are a golfer, there are a bunch of courses still in and around the area. My favorite closed a couple years back but, ( The Witch ) there are still some fairly nice courses around the area that can be played for a bargain. Especially the twilight rates. There are a couple of courses that I found closed, very recently. I was just there over Christmas.

I'm not much for seafood but, the best places for seafood are on Murrels Inlet. Fresh catches, as the boats pull up to the docks every evening with their catches. I personally like the river walk area at Murrels Inlet where you can walk up and down the waterway and choose a spot for a drink or a good meal.
I like "Dead Dog Saloon" .
I like their service, food and the theme is sort of crazy but, There are pictures everywhere of beloved pets that are now just a memory. Hence the name of the place. ( mainly just in the lobby entry and bar areas)
I also like the two biker bars , Beaver Bar and Suck, Bang Blow. ( Suck, Bang, Blow being the basic operation of an internal combustion engine) Normally go to both during bike events.
Went to HS in Columbia SC. We went the first week of summer break to Myrtle Beach every year.

It was great back then. The pavilion. Cruising the strip. Stayed at the Riviera one year (what a dump) and the Beverly one year. Can't really remember the rest. Back then, lots of SC HS students went down for "first week".

I drove through about 10 years ago ... didn't recognize anything. Looked like a tourist trap to me.

The shag is the only dance I've ever done. Learned how at Mrytle Beach.

Well, That's pretty damned impressive in my book.
I can't tell you how many times I've been to a party, wedding, or some bar where they play "beach music" and the "Shag" breaks out.
.................And my Wife and I slowly walk back to our seats.....

:lol2:
