It is the only way you keep a decent one. If they dont absolutely suck, they get hired away immediately.

The only ones that stay are the Doug Nussdrunks and Jim Chaneys.

no way. it will be more time of possession ball. it is in his flea bag Ray Goof blood and only increased by working under the south pole elf that hates offense.

Would this be classified as a "lateral move"? :dunno:

You really think so? They've got key guys leaving early, staff turnover (agree that isn't always bad), and are one high ankle sprain away from starting a true freshman who likely won't fit their new system or a preferred walk-on at QB.

I think the staff turnover issue can be overblown. Urban, Saban, and Fisher have shown it doesn't matter if you have a system in place (Fisher replaced 6 coaches the off-season before they won the NC). Smart learned a lot from Saban, and I think replacing coaches isn't an issue for him (especially w/ the analyst/QC positions - most of those guys are former position coaches/OC's and some are former head coaches waiting for an opening).

I agree w/ @ltraz on this. Again, Smart learned a lot from his time under Saban so I'm not as sold as Law is that he's going to be as hard-headed as Muschamp and go w/ another pro-style OC. We'll see. This is Smart opportunity to "open" up the offense (at least more than they've done).

I think they likely are to promote from within for OC. Coley is likely to get the job, and they more than likely bring someone in
or promote an analyst to TE coach. DC on the other hand I expect Smart to bring in a guy he has worked with in the past. Mainly
because most of their assistants on the D side of the ball are all young guys. If both coordinators are promoted from within then I would
expect Smart to be more involved with the game planning . Similar to how the bowl game went.

I wonder why anybody would make this switch, unless Ga really did not want to keep him. TN is a much worse position today as a team, not any better of a place to live (might be worse), and of course is still SEC East. Anybody have any insight??

I do. That team has been loaded with five star talent at the skill positions, they should be scoring 50 points a game. Chaney ought to be smart enough to know he's been underachieving for a long time and his job isn't secure. Only a place like Tennessee would look at that guy as some kind of "catch."

Some Georgia fans seem to think Smart has been talking to Kiffin about the position. It wouldn't shock me if it ends up being Kiffin since they have worked around each other. He would probably see it as a better spring board to try and get another Power 5 job again also.

If that's the case (Chaney realizes he's underachieved) he could just be job hopping to ensure the big paychecks keep coming in for a few more years. It could be a similar move as Holgersen leaving WVU for Houston (and the guaranteed $4 million pay checks for 4 or 5 more years). He just had a really good team w/ a Heisman type talent at QB and went 8-4. He may have seen a drop off coming next season and the WVU boosters probably aren't too happy w/ 7 to 8 wins a year. Chaney will likely get at least $1mil from UT and that will be good for 2 or 3 years.

That would be a hell of a hire and UGA could pay more than FAU is paying Kiffin.

I agree. I would rather it not happen myself. Kiffin might not be a good head coach but he is pretty good as an OC.

Coley was made the QB coach and co-OC before Chaney left to Tenn. He will just be given the tittle of OC.

Thanks, that is a reason to leave GA, not really a reason to go to TN other than it is the best alternative. If he was so bad why not fire him? Perhaps to save face? Thanks for the input. Time will tell.

Turnover that results in them getting a better OC is a positive. Agree about the QB, but bama could be in the same spot. Also think bama has a little bit of a DC problem and we don't know how their OC will look. Not uga would be favored, bit their building the type of talent and depth that could.

That is what most of the talking heads seem to think now - that he will just have him call the plays now.

Chaney had a three year contract that ended after the 2018 season. Apparantly Georgia had an option and declined. Chaney was technically unemployed so it makes sense that he took another job.

Honestly, every time I see Georgia play I'm astounded at how pedestrian their offense is for a team that is loaded, two and three deep, with players we were drooling over. I guess Tennessee gets to toil under that mediocre yoke for awhile now.
