So.. It was more a question of attitude than politics...

He isn't head coach material at the level of the sport, and his arrogance in and out of the offices rub a lot of people including recruits families the wrong way. If he all he has to focus on is, the offense, not recruiting and the other stuff. He can be decent. The best offense year with him at HC was with another coach at OC. Who would be a great addition to any team as an OC that isn't the coached by a moron.

Mullen sucks. I was happy when he left Gainesville the first time and did not want him back the second time.
It also got worse when we ended up with The Daz, rather than Meyer looking outside the program for Cousin Eddie's replacement.

In the end, he was lazy and realized the worst thing that would happen to him for not recruiting harder and refusing to make obvious needed coaching changes would be a 12 million severance package and more time to be a cuckold for his player loving wife. Other than that he was great! :lol2:

Very good game planning
Terrible game planning. He doesnt even bother it seems. That is why he always comes out flat and usually doesnt score much in first quarter, the opposite of Butterteeth and Cajun Butterteeth, who score early then cant adjust when the defense does.

Mullen's only relative "strength" is adjusting on the fly and at halftime. Even then he will see something but hold the play til the fourth quarter. Unfortunately the game is sometimes out of hand by then to where it doesn't matter or the defense saw it also in adjusted by then.

He just doesn't have the aggressive gene. Spurrier would see something and perhaps pick on that same cornerback or safety six times in a row and score twice. He has none of that.

Ego of a top gun, stats of a bottom half OC.

If you are forced to play an athlete at QB often because you cant recruit a real QB and enjoy 20-30 QB keepers, he might be your guy

And when we were stuck with the crap that Mullen recruited.

Lol.... evaluated Perine, Pitts, Trash and Kadarius Toney as bench players who didnt deserve to be on the field.

Such a great evaluator.
Talent evaluator was meant as sarcasm:

He'd be a great OC choice for a strong head coach like Saban, that could tell him what he wants.
I don't think OU has the strong HC to control him.

He is decent from his own side of the feel up to approaching the red zone. That is where he goes full muLLLLLLLen and playcalling goes to absolute poo

The most productive offense we had while he was head coach here was in 2020, which was the one year he had a different coach design and call plays. Once he took over again in 2021, the offense took a huge step back. His offense works best when he has a tough 230+lb QB. If you don't have a big, durable runner at QB, then you don't want Mullen.

Let me be the first to apologize to the OP for the poor manners of the uncouth and curmudgeonly members of this board and welcome you to the SEC.

We're still deeply apologetic about what Major Wright did to poor Manny Johnson and I can attest that it looked every bit as bad in person as it has looked on the countless replays I'm sure you've seen over the years. I do have to say that the OU fans I met there were very gracious losers. We were actually pretty happy with big game Bob when he was our DC.

As for Mullen, the roughly 35% of the time he actually tries to do his job he does it decently enough. So long as you are okay with him not recruiting and your quarterback getting more carries than any of the running backs.

Hello Gator fans! Sooner here. As you are probably aware, OU has made an offer to Mullen to become our OC. Is this a good move? Would you hire him as an OC? Any insights you can share on his capabilities. Thanks in advance!
Do you have Tebow or Percy Harvin or Trask and a slew of NFL WRs?

Initially, thoughts seem generally positive. Why was he fired?

He came in with some energy and at first was a relief from the mess McElwain left. Grantham brought Jonathan Greenard from Louisville who was an elite pass rusher, so things started ok. 10 win seasons but we all thought that was his ceiling.

Once Greenard left Grantham’s defense tanked. Mullen did nothing about it.

He’s good at game planning and play calling, but most here don’t like his preferred scheme. He did adapt when Kyle Trask proved a fine passer and decision maker. But he was forced into that when Felipe Franks broke his ankle. Trask was clearly the better QB and Mullen kept him on the bench.

But why was he fired? He had a “show cause” penalty imposed on him during the pandemic for an illegal contact during a dead period (or something like that.) Then, since no one could recruit that year, the ncaa extended it another year. I think he soured on recruiting and everything else.

Then half the team quit before our bowl game with OU. Remember his post game presser? He never shook that.

Percolating problems with Grantham and several position coaches were left to fester. Recruiting wasn’t horrible in the class ranking, but key recruits never played a down at UF. He basically quit, but went through the motions enough to collect his fat buyout.

Fair to say his arrogance and abrasive personality, which we saw when he was our OC but Meyer managed well, wound up taking him down

He has been clear that he doesn’t like the current college environment with NIL and free agency.

As a pure Xs & Os guy, schemer and play caller, B+. As a QB coach - B/B+. As a vital part of a championship program? C-. As a recruiter? D.

He might last a year or two with Venables. He might cause one of those veins in Venables’s head to actually explode.

If I was at OU, I’d go after Brian Johnson - who had a ton to do with Trask’s development and success, recruits well and seems like an up and coming coach. I think we all liked him a lot and would welcome him back as an OC/QB coach.

Hiring a loser and a quitter is a bad idea. AD's do it often. SC hired Muschamp after his failure at UF. Mullen will quit on OU.
