Actually, I’ve been scheduled off for spring break for a long time. But since we were not going anywhere, I decided to tackle 2 home projects that I knew were 4-5 days projects. Due to the nature of these, they pretty much ran in parallel.

First was a front door redo. Freaking Florida sun. And this door only receives about an hour of direct sunlight a day.

Complete sand, wood conditioner, 2 coats of stain, 2 coats of semigloss top coat, all the little cracks against the trim got re-caulked, and the white trim painted. Fuk.

Second was our bar area. It’s a little alcove that we stuck some undersized wine console in. We actually had that when we moved in here... and it sorta fit the spot.

Wanted 3 floating shelves with no supports, wanted the mirror to be surrounded by a rock wall (not on top of it), wood beam across threshold, lapboard behind the shelves. Almost bit off more than I could chew, but I got there. A few small details to touch up and install some undershelf lighting.

I'm guessing all the alcohol was consumed during the door project? :dunno:

Door project really sucked since it has been 90 every day this week. Actually, the bar project sucked too. I’m spent.

The booze was safely tucked away.

The front door project looks good, but until you restore the booze to its proper place - and provide pictures - it is not possible to adequately judge the bar project. :swampqueen:

I still have to clear coat the bottom 2 shelves. But about 2/3rds of it is in our bedroom. I am sorta liking it in there.

[IMG] The previous bar was 10 years worth of randomly thrown crap on the counter. The wife “has plans” for this one. God help me.

Both projects look great Brad. Not sure what product you used as a topcoat but I've found marine spar varnish holds up better to UV and general exposure.

the hours and hours and hours i spent as a teenager redoing mahogany rails on boats... still a nightmare... then you get nostalgic and say, "I think I'll do my own staircase! ;)

What’s crazy is the door is under a very large front patio with an 8ft overhang. Water never touches it except morning dew. The sun has to be at a perfect angle to hit it directly, usually between 8-9am. This is 2nd redo on it. But I really took my time this go around.

I'm not sure "nostalgic" is the right word, but you did remind me of my one experience with mahogany rails on a boat.
When I was in college one year, one of my HS buddies was living at home going to the local CC and working on one of the booze cruise boats that go up and down the Potomac River in the nice weather. Right before spring break he called and asked if I wanted to work over the break helping getting the boat ready for the season. Being a typical broke college student and knowing next to nothing about boats, I jumped at the chance. My first clue should have been when the night before I started, my buddy told me to dress warmly.
I arrived at the boat and the guy in charge handed me a wire brush and pointed me to the mahogany saying give all that a good cleaning. I was beat at the end of each day, but at least I had beer money for the rest of the semester!

I'm doing nothing so ambitious. My aim is to address small annoyances and teach the kids:

Son (age 11) took apart the doorknob to the garage that keeps slipping into a locked position when we go in and out. He replaced it with a new doorknob, and used the smartkey tool to rekey it to match the rest of the house keys. He did help me swap out the front door handles and deadlock last fall, this was proving to both of us he learned something.

Daughter (age 14) took apart the faulty double light switch in the master bedroom that was making the lights flicker (the other switch runs the ceiling fan). Biggest point in this exercise was safety - ensure the proper fuse is turned off in the basement. Secondary point was building confidence in working with electricity (safely). A few screws and she had it apart, took the wires off and attached them to the new switch. Next lesson - verify it works before you reassemble. This is where problems occurred - I'm not an electrician, but following the instructions the switch can run off one hot lead to feed both switches (that's how it ran with the old switch). Unfortunately, one switch will only work when the other is on. It doesn't make sense, I'm going to go buy another $3 switch to see if maybe there's something wrong with this one.

The 'payment' for the jobs is a trip to Dunkin for a frozen drink and to get out of the house. My daughter is also learning you don't get paid unless the job is done.

My project. No film left on the tile btw. Will search for before pics. Started as just studs and a tarp for the ceiling and a concrete UNEVEN floor. That small table was just to give me a clue how the UF lamp would look under the gator. My problem is dozens of gator posters and limited wall space. I have 100s of options and little talent or gatordecorating

12 x 24 will be my office/gator room/stair master suite........Maybe a TV on the wall later and modern road side couch if it works out.
