Agreed. There should be a stat of how many games he'd bet his team would win and they did win. That's confidence.

Pro baseball and it's heritage and it's unwritten rules and it's 162 game schedule and never ending playoffs and it's tubby managers dressed in the same uniforms as the players can suck a fat one. I mean seriously. These fat, old managers are dressed in the uniforms that the players are in. They look ridiculous.
I think it would be awesome if football coaches had to wear pads and jerseys and basketball coaches had to wear tank top jerseys and shorts.

Still bitter about the '94-95 MLB players strike?

The one thing people often overlook here is that Pete was heavily indebted to the tune of 200k at one time. So he obviously could have been influenced to throw a game to satisfy some of what he owed without ever having to "bet" against his team...

He lied about betting as a player so his supporters could argue that the lifetime ban should apply to Pete Rose the manager but that Pete Rose the player should be allowed in.

Already weak argument rendered completely moot by this disclosure.

It's a lifetime ban. Lifetime means lifetime. Rose is still alive, he's still banned.

I say first we let Shoeless Joe into the HOF. He's been dead a long time.

After Rose is dead for a decade or so, then we can think about putting him in too.

And it's not just about betting against your team and then taking a dive. It's about connections with organized crime. It's about tipping them off (knowingly or unknowingly) and mostly it's about losing so much that you "owe" them.

Actions have consequences. I loved Pete Rose as a player. He was Charlie Hustle.

No matter.

He has earned his lifetime ban.

Nobody has ever hustled like Charlie Hustle, but he was deep in the hole to the bookies and totally unprepared for life after baseball. He signs autographs for a living in a Vegas casino. Sad situation.

A prime example of why athletes should get college degrees.

It's much worse that he bet on baseball as a manager. His lame argument all these years has been that, yes he bet as a manager, but that shouldn't exclude him from being inducted into the Hall as a player.

As a manager he bet against his team, threw guys on short rest, etc.. He was heavily indebted to the mob at the time.

This new evidence only serves to demolish his already weak position that he didn't bet as a player. And yes, the notebook shows that he frequently bet against the Reds when he was a player.

Too bad he didn't just use chemicals to artificially improve his skill like some others......... apparently that's not such a big deal.

If bold is true...he should never be let in as anything.

Babe Ruth was no saint, and there a few more in the Hall that aren't exactly moral examples for the youngster. Unless they can prove he threw a game or even the outcome ( say the team won but not by as many runs as the bookies had it..) The Hit King should be in the Hall, He played hard, gave it his all, the way he played is textbook of how to do it on the field.

He should never sniff the Hall....ever. The consequences for betting on baseball were made 100% clear with the Black Sox scandal. He knew it, he did it anyway.

This isn't a moral issue it's an "integrity of the game" issue. It's been proven that Rose bet AGAINST his team both as a player and a manager. You can't do that and expect not to be banished, especially with 100 years of precedent behind the rule.

Babe Ruth boozed and womanized, that's pretty much a prerequisite for being a professional athlete.
