Damn, I know all my childhood heroes are going to die. I loved Pete Rose.
I just watched the Netflix show "Charlie Hustle".
Enjoyed it very much. Got a little cringy near the end though.

As I just mentioned in chat.
I loved baseball when I was a kid. Went to my first baseball game at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati in 1972. "Big Red Machine".

Everyone should play every game at every level like Pete did.
RIP GOAT
Hated the Reds growing up....was Pirates fan....still my favorite player from that era was Pete Rose

I’m no Pete Rose fan, and I think it was ridiculous to have a collision at the plate in an all-star game, but it’s not fair to say it ended Fosse’s career. He played several more seasons, including winning a pair of rings with the A’s, and remained a top flight catcher who was highly respected by the pitchers he caught. He also had several more injuries, totally unrelated to the shoulder injury Rose caused, but it is fair to say he was never the same hitter again. He had 16 HRs heading into that all-star break, but finished the season with only 18. He never hit more than 12 in any season after.

I watched that game live. Even for that time, it was considered over the top that a player would initiate that kind of contact in an all-star game.

He's controversial because he was a drunken gambling addict, blatantly broke the rules that he KNEW resulted in a lifetime ban, then lied about it for decades. No remorse of any kind. If he hadn't been such an arrogant, reckless fool,
Allegedly.....

Rose even corked his bats, at least in his later years.

A corked bat doesn't help you hit a major league curveball....

You guys are absolute idiots. There's a HUGE difference between CHEATING and GAMBLING on your own sport. MLB made it perfectly clear after the Black Sox scandal that betting on baseball meant a lifetime ban. Period. Rose, knowing that consequence perfectly well like every other player, bet on baseball and got a lifetime ban.

Gaylord Perry didn't bet on baseball.
Barry Bonds didn't bet on baseball.

Why is that so hard to understand?

In terms of the cheating, it's an indisputable fact that Rose corked his bats - we have the X-rays. He of course denied and lied about that too, even with obvious evidence. The dude wouldn't know the truth if it bludgeoned him over the head. However, liars are peppered throughout the HOF - that's not why he isn't in.

CHEATING and GAMBLING - know the difference.

A truly odious person. He had sex with a minor. He refused to support his out-of-wedlock kid. He did prison time for tax evasion. He didn't just "gamble," he bet on baseball. And he didn't just bet on baseball, he manipulated his lineups and tired out his arms as a manager when he was betting on his game. About the best you can say about him as a player is that he played for a long time. His career .784 OPS is 638th all-time. Behind about 500 people who never made it to the Hall. He was also a career negative fielder. And he was a dirty player to boot. Despite all that, all he had to do was admit that he bet on baseball, and he would have been reinstated. He was too self-important to do that, and his fragile ego wouldn't allow him to tell the truth. Just a truly awful individual, and if Shilling and Joe Jackson can't get in, this piece of garbage sure as hell shouldn't either.

Maybe they just didn't get caught.....I'll bet there is a HIGH percentage of players from yesterday AND MORE today who bet on sports including their own with all the legalized and online betting there is.

I watched it live too. I remember alot of people saying Fosse shouldn't have tried to block the plate too.
That's one of the plays I remember that made me jump up off the couch, fist pumping....YES!!
To this day, I think Fosse thought Rose would try to slide under him.
He challenged the man, and found out. FAFO.

There are a bunch of sports memories that have that sort of impact.
It alll depends on which team or person you're rooting for.

This is not a good argument. People who don’t get caught don’t lessen the guilt of nor the punishment for, those who do. Much like Adam and Eve, Rose did the one thing that he knew was an absolute no-no. I suspect all the other miserable conduct gave him a feeling of entitlement and he thought he’d never get banned. Not the Pete Rose! I might have had a little respect for him if he had manned up and owned it instead of turning into a lying whiny little bytch.

A better argument for you would be the case of Shohei Ohtani. There’s no doubt that guy was betting on baseball, but they made his assistant the fall guy. Compulsive gamblers being what they are, it’s only a matter of time before it happens again. I wonder how MLB will deal with that one.

Fosse wanted to stop that run as much as Rose wanted to score it or he wouldn't have been blocking the plate "in a exhibition game". There are no exhibition games....except in softball.

So all this speculation and hyperbole is a better argument?
