Treating people equally is seen as number one trait to be a "real American" - CNNPolitics

What are your top three traits that someone living in the United States should possess to be a "real" American?

For me, in order: 1. Supporting the Constitution, 2. Taking responsibility for your actions/obeying the law 3. Accepting other's differences.

A snippet from the article below, the entire article can be found through the link above.

The trait most important to being a "real American" is to believe in treating people equally, according to a Grinnell College poll released on Monday. Offered a list of traits, 90% of respondents said treating people equally is very important, followed by taking personal responsibility for one's actions (88% said that was very important), accepting people of different racial backgrounds (81%), and supporting the US Constitution (80%).

The least important traits were being a Christian (55% said it was not important), having been born in America (49%), and having lived in America most of one's life (45%).

Republicans and Democrats have different views on what makes a "real American," however. The top three traits for Republicans include taking responsibility for one's actions (94% very important), supporting the US constitution (93%), and treating people equally (90%). Democrats agreed in seeing equal treatment and personal responsibility as very important traits, but included accepting people of different racial backgrounds in their top three (88% said it was very important).

The biggest difference between the parties is among those who rate speaking English as very important to being an American. Sixty-two percent of Republicans believed speaking English was very important to being a "real American" compared to only 29% of Democrats and 44% of independents.

Your question reminded me of something I read about Traditional America Values a couple of years ago.

"This description of American cultural values was first introduced in American Ways: An Introduction to American Culture. It explains the value system that has allowed the United States to assimilate millions of people from diverse cultures all over the world and create a unique, enduring American identity. There are three pairs of values consisting of three reasons why immigrants have come (and still do) to the United States and three prices that are paid for these benefits.

The first is for Individual Freedom and the price for that is Self-Reliance. We cannot be truly free if we cannot take care of ourselves and be independent.

The second is for Equality of Opportunity, and the price for that is Competition. If everyone has an equal chance for success, then we have to compete.

The third is for The American Dream, the opportunity for a better life and a higher standard of living. The price for the American Dream has traditionally been Hard Work.

The relationship among these values—the rights and the responsibilities—creates the fabric of the American society. It is this fabric that defines the American Dream—the belief that if people take responsibility for their lives and work hard, they will have the individual freedom to pursue their personal goals and a good opportunity to compete for success."

That is where shyt runs off the rails with liberal ideology. It's has been redefined as Equal Outcomes in their doctrine.

It's an interesting question to say the least.

For liberals America is just a group of ideas -- diversity, tolerance, equality of outcomes, open borders. For conservatives such as myself America is a country with a certain heritage, tradition, language (primarily English) and borders. Conservatives also readily accept some of the ideas stated by liberals but within the parameters of Nationalism. Conservatives can be for tolerance and diversity up to a point and not in the extreme. They don't make those ideas gods. I am on the wrong side of history because the population is becoming more liberal as time goes by. It is dangerous when we as a country can no longer easily define who we are as a people. The new America as an idea cannot last. It will break up because there is no cohesion, no fabric, to hold it together.

It was the orthodox Christian writer, C.K. Chesterton, who said that when men stopped believing in God it didn't mean they believed in nothing, but on the contrary they could believe in anything. That would include believing in evil.

My Mom is a (legal) immigrant from South America who came here asking for and getting asylum; started college and got a nursing degree; then got a job here; married and raised a family--then became a citizen. But she was probably more patriotic than my Dad--who served our country and is about as American as they come! Mom votes mostly Republican; Dad votes mostly Democrat (though I'd never call either of them straight party-line voters).

Point being: that's the beauty of this country. People who live here all their lives DO understand the unique and special country we have here. Our history, culture, and traditions. And people who are born elsewhere--but who come here and adopt our country in every way: learn our language, culture, and political systems--they can become every bit as American as those who were born here. There's nothing wrong with seeking to protect our culture and our Constitution: both are important. But always--always--leaving room for those who come here and WANT to become Americans.

              treating people equally (90%)”

So, reverse-racism (fka white guilt), for example, is un-American. I agree with that.
