Great meet for the Gators. Solid performance all around. Still would like the vault scores to get a little tighter but much better than last year. The tri-meet was interesting. Kinda hard to follow since 3 events were going at the same time, I thought it actually took the crowd out of it. Still fun to watch.

#2 Florida travels to #17 Auburn tonight (8:30 SECN). Gators are really just competing against themselves at this point. They would like to get a nice road score to bump up their NQS (NQS determines national seeding for the post season). Auburn has been struggling of late but of course when the Gators roll into town, arenas are sold out and emotions run high. Florida should handle Auburn and win comfortably with a 1 point margin. Since we are hitting mid season and the grind can start to take effect, I could see Rowland changing the lineups a bit to give some of the gynmasts a break, which could open the door to Auburn if falls are counted. The team has seemed pretty locked this year so I dont expect that to happen. Hopefully continue to build on their vault rotation.

Last week was a solid performance at the tri-meet with Florida almost hitting the 198 mark. It was good to see the Gators against a top 5 team and be in control the whole meet. Of course great to see Trinity Thomas get another 10 on beam this time. If you get a chance, watch Savannah Schoenherr on bars. She has been really close to notching another 10 for the Gators. Her dismount is pretty cool with a half twist at the last second to land like a cat.

Savannah Schoenherr's bars routine is amazing. If I'm not mistaken, one of the judges did give her a 10 last week, but the other one took a slight deduction, so she ended with a 9.95.

That is correct one gave her a 10 the other 9.95 for a 9.975 total score. Not sure where I saw the deduction from but still damn good.

It's also worth pointing out that Alyssa Baumann also nearly notched a perfect 10 on the floor exercise, with one judge giving her a 10 and the other a 9.95. You could see that she was disappointed as she's a senior, and chances to get a perfect 10 are running out.

Alyssa also had a 9.975 on beam a few weeks back in the meet vs. LSU. She's getting really close to a perfect 10. I'd love to see her get one before her Gators career ends.

Just one correction Baumann is a junior. The only seniors on the squad are Amelia Hundly and Rachel Gowey along with specialists Megan Chant and Sierra Alexandar

cool. I’m glad we have Alyssa for another year. I hope she gets payback in the UGA meet since her younger sister bested her last year.

UF at Georgia (7pm SECN)
Missed last week's post due to travel. The annual link to pink meet which featured Alabama this year was a solid outing by the Gators to clinch the regular-season SEC championship. Gators looked solid but not great. Still had some troubles on their dismounts and sticking landings. These are the type of things that cost .1 - .2 of a point and through a rotation can be the difference between a 49.1 and 49.8. Gators have 3 meets to go before post-season. Of concern is Nya Reed still being held out, not quite sure what is going on with her. Initially when she left the line-up it was said for the flu, but since she has not returned one may speculate discipline issues might be in play. On a positive note, the vault rotation looks to be coming together much better than this time last year and will be important if they hope to win the title.

Florida travels to Georgia tonight for the Gymdawgs "Black Out" meet. Expect a pretty hostile environment and Georgia home scoring has been notoriously crazy in favor of the home team. If the Gators can pull the win, they will finish the SEC undefeated. This is the type of meet that years past Florida would lose so it will be interesting to see how the squad comes out. Alyssa Baumann's sister is on Georgia's team so it is a kinda fun rivalry to see them compete against each other. One goal that the Gators can accomplish, IF they can score better than a 198.05 and Oklahoma scores under a 197.9 at their meet, the Gators will take over the top spot in the nation. Still think OU is the team to beat but nice for bragging rights. Go Gators!

Gators travel to Penn State this afternoon for a rare Saturday performance (4pm BigTen Network). Florida goes out of conference in preparation for post season regional play. It might prove smart, as Penn State is a regional host site and a decent chance that Florida gets sent there as the #1 seed. Nothing much to gain here other than experience. I would not be surprised if we see some of the regulars rested to keep them fresh for the SEC tournament and post-season. Trinity Thomas (the #1 all-around gymnast in the country) however will probably go since her hometown is about 2 hours away and will have a large family/home contingent there. Barring having to count a fall, UF should easily handle the pedophiles and look to return home for senior night next week. This would be an excellent watch after watching the basketball game. We will all probably need some positive Gator vibes after that.

Last week Dan Mullen got into crushing the Dawgs by giving the gymnasts a pre-meet speech. Good to see coaches from other sports supporting each other. The Gators ruined the Georgia "black-out" and senior night by coasting to a one point margin of victory (huge in gymnastics) despite 10k cheering against them. Team is looking solid but still has that "perfect" meet out there with all stuck landings and toe points. Hopefully saving it for nationals, because they are the only team with a shot of stopping Oklahoma and the Maggie Nichols farewell tour.

By the way if things get really bad with basketball, might want to switch over and check out future gator gymnast Morgan Hurd represent the US at the America Cup at 12:30 on NBC Hurd has a high probably to ultimately be on of the four gymnasts representing the US in the Tokyo olympics this summer! The future is bright!

I'm not understanding the one of four gymnasts statement. Does that mean to go with two others that are locks like Biles, to make up the six that go to Tokyo.

The Olympic committee changed the rules for this Olympics to try and blunt the dominance that the US has had the last couple of Olympics. There are only 4 allowed on the team. Countries can have an additional 2 individual gymnasts but they cannot compete for the team. The qualification rules for the individual gymnasts are different and they are not selected by the US Olympic committee but rather can qualify through performances at International events. This in theory prevents the US from placing lets say an athlete who is a stud on vault but not the other events on the team. All 4 have to be solid all-arounders. The Gators by the way have a solid chance of placing two of the 4 on the team, besides Hurd, Riley McClusker (will be a freshman next year) is right there to get on the squad.

I know you know exactly what you are talking about but, I don't understand how the scoring will go. Now six compete with five counting, I think. What about counting falls and injuries. Sorry for being so lost on this.

No worries, only 4 compete with all 4 counting, so yes, if a fall occurs, the fall counts. They are allowed to select alternates which can be called on in the event of injury (Ragan Smith was an alternate for the 2016 Olympics) but only those 4 scores will be added to the team totals. The individual gymnasts while representing the US as an individual will do their own thing. I am also not a complete expert on the Olympic format so I could stand corrected, but at the Olympics they have 2 separate competition days. One for individual and one for team competition. That is why someone like Simone Biles can potentially win 6 golds, 4 for the individual events and 1 for individual all-around at the individual portion of the competition and 1 for the team competition. Idk why they really screwed with the rules this year. Apparently there has been enough uproar that they are going back to old rules for 2024.
