I feel zero pity for the idiots who live there and keep electing these utterly clueless morons into office.

San Francisco has had rent control for decades and they have the most expensive housing market in the country because they limited new construction to 15k units when the population was growing by 100k a year.

IT'S BASIC FVVKING MATH YOU COMMUNIST IDIOTS.

The sooner that state implodes, the better.

IF I owned property, I'd be liquidating as quick as possible and GTFO.

I've said it a million times, liberal big government "solutions" are like the old lady who swallowed the fly. They make things worse so they add another "solution" to fix it which makes it worse and so on and so forth.

Over development was a problem so they put limits on new construction.
Which made housing expensive and scarce (you know, supply and demand).
So people couldn't afford to buy homes so they had to rent. As property values went up (due to scarcity), rents went waaaaay up.
To compound matters, some places insisted on crazy stuff like all new buildings had to have solar and crap that made them even more expensive.
So now they are going to cap rent increases. So who wants to build a new apartment complex? Nobody?
If you own an existing apartment complex, why would you spend a dime improving or renovating it? Landscaping died? Replace it with mulch. Pool leaking? Drain it and throw a tarp over it. Needs new paint? Too bad. In fact, you'll see what was happening in NYC a few decades ago...lots of mysterious fires burning down buildings. California is going to get a lot uglier.

          These people are idiots.

          Fcuking idiots.

Tax rolls roll downhill. The upcoming citizen egress had better not spread their blue state blown state librawls.

As one of many New Yorkers who left that state, I can say with full confidence rent control is the dumbest thing I can think of to fix housing. Good luck getting one of those rent stabilized apartments - they're passed down family member to family member, you have no shot at one. Like all government programs, people game the system and those not connected don't benefit.

What is discouraging is that some of these concepts had pretty much been ruled out as unworkable due to basic economics. Whether you were liberal or conservative there some basic accepted facts, and one was that price controls, by themselves, just don't work.

But apparently we have to learn that again. Maybe CA can prove that for us, again.

Are you losing the faith? In the traditional liberal belief system, if a government program appears to be failing, the solution is a more expansive government program.

The country that has made the most progress towards achieving the liberal utopia of equality of income is Venezuela.

They all want massive govt infrastructure investment in affordable housing too... so it's not "by themselves". Calli's got this (with Fed dollars of course)... ;)

Sorry --- but let me ask you this: are you opposed to the California rent control bill because it is an unreasonable intrusion on the free market or because you believe the government should have full control over housing?

Here is exactly what you said

"Whether you were liberal or conservative there some basic accepted facts, and one was that price controls, by themselves, just don't work. "

That statement is clear as mud. As a conservative and having observed government intervention in housing markets for decades, any government intervention is likely to have a negative outcome. You seem to be suggesting, in the classic liberal sense, that government price controls wold work if combined with other intrusive government programs.

The key word of course is control. What's going on in California and New York well spread across the rest of the country if one all of the far left liberals becomes president and they take back the Senate.

I am curious what you mean "by themselves". serious, honest question here.

FTR, I am still new here, but I don't think you are a stupid liberal. Stubborn in your belief maybe, but not stupid.

Utility pricing is largely government (or quasi govt agency) controlled.
