Steve Spurrier goes back to Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee to help celebrate the dedication of Steve Spurrier Field at Kermit Tipton Stadium. Kermit Tipton was the legendary coach of the Science Hill Hilltoppers. Spurrier never forgot where he came from. This took place a few years back, 2010, I believe.

Science Hill has a long tradition of high school sports excellence in Tennessee. He made all-state in football, basketball, and baseball. As a starting pitcher he never lost a game in three years and led his team to two consecutive state baseball championships. He was named a high school All-American quarterback. Spurrier is a member of both the Tennessee and Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

Spurrier's brother, Graham, still lives in Johnson City. Although I think he stayed away for a number of years, Spurrier has enjoyed going back and being among the people of his old hometown.

Footage from a game between the Science High School Hilltoppers and Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett High School 1962 with Steve Spurrier at QB for the Toppers.

As a side not Bobby Dodd played QB for Kingsport DB before going on to play single wing tailback at Tennessee then head coach at Georgia Tech. Ray Graves was the defensive coordinator and number one assistant to Dodd at Tech. When Graves came to Florida to head coach it was his Tennessee connection, the fact that both Graves' and Spurrier's fathers were ministers, and that Tennessee ran the run-oriented single wing that led SOS to head to Gainesville.
