"Of the state’s seven Division 1 schools, only the University of Florida is not represented locally. With 14 area players, South Florida by far leads the way. Among the local players who call themselves Bulls are running back Elijah Mack (Charlotte), center Michael Galati (Manatee), brother tight ends Derek and Ryan Hintze (Braden River), defensive lineman Darrien Grant (Southeast), tackle Eric Mayes (Booker), and fullback Riley Sheehan (Riverview). Former Port Charlotte Pirate Malik Dixon left the program this spring."

:what:
We will face one of them week one in Karan Higdon...

other than Brian Poole and Trey Burton, our luck with SWFL athletes has been spotty at best in the last 10 years

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Jonathan Dowling, Mike Blakely, Justin Midgett (over 10 years for him). Who else am I missing?
yeah, the article says to me we arent even trying... We get ZERO from IMG, Manatee High, Venice, etc... Why is that?

Based on the list of schools, it looks more like the level of athlete out of that region is lower than in the past. I don't see any perennial powers among those schools. It's not the mid-90s with Tommie Frazier, Peter Warrick, Edgerrin James, Jevon Kearse, etc.

I'm a Charlotte grad, btw, and I would like to see more local kids end up at UF or other bigtime schools

Well, i would take many of the kids coming out of IMG... Demarcus Christmas would be a nice addition on our line. Elijah Mack and Richie James are pretty good players and we will see how good Karan Higdon is game one this year when he lines up against us...

I get what this post is about, but really IMG has only been a program now for like 4 or 5 years. We got Isaiah Stoke (basketball) from there and we have Curtis Dunlap Jr who is an olinemen there (pretty highly ranked) currently committed. Also, we have Taylor Upshaw from braden River HS also committed at DE, so I think we are getting into that area more.

I think the gap came from Muschamp screwing up the area....

I guess in my mind, I always exclude IMG since a lot of those kids aren't from the area. Definitely some big schools in the IMG list.

I really hope Elijah Mack is successful in college. history has not been kind to the higher rated kids out of Charlotte High, though. I'm having trouble thinking of anyone other than Todd Rebol making a big impact in college. Lots of flame outs

I agree. IMG started its first football year in 2013 when Muschamp was coach for us, and tbh he just didnt know what he was doing imo. I think Florida has learned that as long as IMG keeps getting the elite players we need to make it a focal point. But Muschamp in general let some of Florida's best players slip away.. Derrick Henry cough cough. However, that's all past and Mac has really got this recruiting thing on a roll.

Outside of IMG (and let's face it, that isn't really an area school because it can basically recruit whoever it wants) SWFL doesn't offer all that much top tier talent. That's not to say none could come from there, certainly there are going to be good players. But it isn't exactly a hotbed for college football recruiting at the level we should be looking for.

IMG kids aren't SWFL kids.
What difference does that make? We should still be recruiting them... BTW they are fielding 2 teams this year. A national team and a local team.

Earnest Graham, Jevon Kearse, and I'm sure there are more. Honestly, just not a hotbed. You get your occasional Deion Sanders or Noel Devine or Sammy Watkins, but it's better to have one coach work the area but focus on Miami Metro and Tampa

:dunno: Why does everyone here give up on IMG? Manatee pumps out players every year too...

It simply means they aren't from that area.

Recruiting is a nationwide biz though, so I don't understand the reason why we dont have a coach parked there every week.
