$8 million a year it a ton of money for a coach who may never again duplicate this years success. But when you only have 2 winning seasons in something like 30 years, you do what you have to do. Good for him. Time will tell whether he turns out to be the next Urban Meyer or the next Mark Stoops. Considering how bad Indiana has been for decades, their fan base will happy either way.
Good friend of mine, (an IU grad has worn the same sweatshirt every day for the last month), enjoy it while you can John Morgan!

I checked the actual article in it specifically does not say.

Besides most coaching contracts have out clauses for certain schools anyway, although those are rarely published.

I think the point being missed here is that Cignetti, who’s supposedly all about winning, just signed a contract that at a minimum makes it more difficult for him to leave a place that has a very well known ceiling. Sorry, winners don’t stay at a place like Indiana, especially with the jobs that will be opening this season and the next. He can say what he wants, but the fact is he’s clearly content being at a place where he’ll not win anything of consequence. Same thing I said about LK if he chose to turn down our offer. Tells you all you need to know about the person. Most importantly, it says they’re not interested, therefore not willing, to do what it takes to win championships. We’ve already had that.

5 years ago you would've been right, but with NIL and a 12 team playoff, this is no longer the case. Guy has a shot to build a legitimate championship legacy at a place where there's zero pressure to win, rather than following someone else in a high-pressure gig. Can't say I blame him, and Bloomington isn't a terrible place to live

I do blame him. Bloomington is a terrible place to live. And he’ll never win anything there.

Maybe so. My point is there's more upside with almost no risk in comparison to a few years ago. But time will tell.

I was sort of joking. You’re not alone in thinking some schools could become new threats due to NIL. I’ve heard the argument that SMU wouldn’t necessarily let us or anyone else take Lashlee if we wanted him, nor would he automatically see them as a job with limitations at this point. I don’t really agree with that, but the argument makes some sense.

In the case of Cignetti though, I’d be more inclined to think he feels he can win it all there if he was doing that now or had done that. But as long as he’s bringing in 50th ranked classes and he isn’t winning it all. And to lock himself up without knowing that IU can in fact compete with anyone, seems very premature.

Compared to what? Gary?

Guys, marginal teams arent sneaking through a 12 game playoff. You might win one game against more talented team if there is some freak injury or something, but you arent winning 4 games.

There will probably be a bunch if AllSEC Final Fours much to the chagrin of the other two "power" conferences.

Gary is an urban hellscape. Bloomington is nice enough with nearby Brown County and some of the most beautiful parts of Indiana, which isn't saying a lot, I know.

I think if Washington, having the 26th ranked talent composite last year, can make it to the NCG, IU can too but it will take a lot of NIL money.

This. For all the inclusivity talk, the fact is a team like 2022 TCU will probably never see the NC game ever again.

Yes, Washington can win one game.

Maybe Indiana can win one game too. And then they'd be in the second round of 8.

He’d be wise to let that contract sit on his desk until the season is complete and see what he’s offered elsewhere.
He'd be a fool not to sign that contract. Who's gonna swoop in this year? I'm sure his agent knows the market.

Sofla talking out his ass. Bloomington is actually a really nice town. I'm not saying if you are a top tier coach that Bloom is where you want to be, but there are blue bloods located in much shttier locations. Let's start with Columbus.

I was joking about town itself. I’ve never seen it and have no desire. My point was that if you’re truly wanting to be the next great coach and win it all, you don’t sign a new contract extension after one season when your name is being floated elsewhere. You think Meyer even entertained staying at BG or Utah beyond what he absolutely had to? This looks more like a guy who knows his run is about to end on Saturday and that his stock will never be higher, and an AD that realized they are probably making a mistake but will at least have watchable football for the next 5 or so years.

I’m not even knocking Cignetti. I’m just saying he is clearly comfortable staying at a second tier program rather than getting a big payday and the pressures of a tier one. That’s ok, even respectable. I just wouldn’t want that mentality here.

I love it there. Rolling hills with hardwoods. One of my favorite movies of all time was filmed there...Breaking Away.
