I ran out to pick up Christmas Day sushi and there were so many turkeys on our neighbor’s farm. There were several deer out there yesterday.

@Fodderwing getting the job done!! I need to get one more deer this season.
Good luck!
I tried Christmas afternoon through Wednesday morning freezing my nuggets off. It was 19 that Monday morning. Pipes had busted in the trailer. That was fun…
I have 3 in the freezer and that’s enough for me so I was horn hunting. Seen the same 8pt 2 afternoons and had my finger on the trigger but decided to let him walk. Hopefully he’ll make it and be around next year. He’ll be a dandy if he does. The afternoons were definitely more active while I was there.

Nice! Where did you hit her? What are you shooting?
Cz 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 shooting 123 grain SST bullets.

Deer was 60 - 70 yards facing with a bit of quarter. Bullet entered just behind right shoulder, exited just aft of the rib cage on the left side. Deer bolted maybe 25 yards and I heard her crash.

Doe #2. 50 - 60 yards, same gun and bullet. Deer traveled 75 - 80 yards, crossing a shooting lane in the process, so I had an easy track.

Bullet passed from right to left. 20230102_075604.jpg 20230102_091602.jpg

Fodderwing posted that he shoots Cz 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 shooting 123 grain SST bullets and that made me wonder what other deer hunters on this board shoot. I don't deer hunt but I do have (or at least I did have before my tragic boating accident and lost all my weapons) two bolt action .308 rifles (one is a Mossberg and the other I can't remember off-hand) and a Remington AR10 also in .308. I prefer(ed) shooting 183 grain bullets.

What does everyone else prefer to shoot?

For deer I'm shooting a 150gn SST in 300 win mag. Haven't lost one yet. They are either DRT or leave a blood trail Ray Charles could follow.

Jeepers, you guys are leaving nothing to chance!

I shoot a 6.5-06. It was a wildcat round gun that my mom had made for my dad as a wedding gift with a Springfield bolt action. I have to hand load because the rounds are not commercially available. Generally shoot Hornady 145 grain ballistic tips. And those feel like overkill for whitetail - about right for mulies.

I shoot my 300 Win Mag with 185 grain rounds for Elk.

I use a .270 Winchester. Had completely taken apart and gone over. I put it on a black synthetic stock. I had a Leupold Vari-X 3 but changed to a Zeiss scope a few years back and am very happy with the setup, I shoot a 150 grain bullet as most shots are 60-120 yards.

How many casings do you have? Also, what will you do when those you have can no longer be reloaded?

This is based on the fact that I'm hunting in LA where deer are smaller (but wayyyyy better tasting than what I grew up with in Michigan, where deer were big) and distances shorter (shots usually under 100 yards, can be out to 200). Keep in mind, I have short arms, so I like shorter barrels/more compact platforms, especially for quick handling/snap shooting:
  • 97.874563% of the time, I hunt with my single shot, 20" barrel, Youth H&R Handi-Rifle in .243. Shoots flat out to 100+, never lost a deer.
  • Other times I'll use my Ruger Gunsite Scout, 16" barrel, .308. I f'n love this rifle.
  • Once in a rare while, I'll use an AR-15 lower with a Wilson Combat 7.62x40 WT upper. I love it, a custom/dead round for sure, great for hogs and stuff.
  • For ALL of those, I only use Barnes TTSX bullets.
  • If I'm going "out west," I use my Desert Tactical Arms (now Desert Tech) original, first run produced, Stealth Recon Scout (SRS), with full 26" barrel in .338LM. With my short arms and bullpup design, the OAL of the ENTIRE platform (w/26" barrel) is only 37.5"... which is about the same OAL as an AR-15 with fully extended stock. The beauty of the SRS is that it has swappable barrels/bolts that I can change in less than 90 second with NO loss of zero.
  • I generally only use NightForce glass, not because I'm an arrogant kvnt, but because I can get them for practically free (benefit of the business...).

Deet is our resident T-Rex small arms dealer...
On Nalt's CZ note... If I had no scruples in regards to gifts/FCPA stuff, I could have one of each firearm, long, short, whatevs... CZ has made in the last 20 years... for FREE and I LOVE CZ products... it's been tough.... very, very tough. My daily carry is a P-10C.

The caliber/platform I use on a given day depends on what mood I am in.

But generally I like light, fast handling carbines if I don't expect to have long shots.

I shot the hog above with a 6.8 SPC II using Hornady 120 grain SST ammo, distance of about 200 yards. I also used a Trigger Stick Tripod for support while making the shot. I just figured the 6.8 was better suited to a 200 yard shot than my CZ. I was sitting in my truck watching a wheat field, so either rifle has available. I had the door open, so I just stepped of the truck out and made the shot.

But over 50% of the deer I have tagged were taken with a Ruger M77 270 Winchester shooting 140 grain bullets.

As I said... :sadnanner: I'm still close with them, but there was a stretch from 2006 to around 2010 where every damn time, it was, "Really, we mean it, what do you want? Don't worry, we get it to you."
