Really sad. He was great for the game of baseball, wish he could have been around it longer. Cancer is a motherf*cker.

He took a medical leave of absence in early spring. I think he'd already had surgery on his mouth due to cancer. I haven't read all the details on how it transpired.

Wikipedia says it was cancer of the salivary glands from extensive use of chewing tobacco. He'd been fighting it since 2010. I had no idea he was sick, either.

Extremely sad about this. He was a huge childhood hero of mine. One of the greatest, if not THE greatest hitter of all time. And a complete class act.

Pretty disturbing that freaking chewing tobacco can take 20+ years off your life.

Wow, very sad news. He was awesome. Chewing tobacco can do some pretty nasty damage to everything associated with the mouth. Surprisingly, survival rates for salivary gland cancer is pretty good. Especially if found early. (Like 90% 5 year survival for stage 1). But I cant find any specific details regarding his diagnosis.
