I honestly like everything we’re doing except at the most important position.

Hope we figure out a way to bring a legit transfer in or Lagway reclassifies… that or Mertz somehow balls out and I eat tons of crow

2 straight classes with only stealing a guy from Butters at the last minute for QB ain’t good.

They've been pretty lenient on that. I think jt daniels is on his 4th school. There's plenty of repeat transfers in the portal. Either way, he should be a take because we don't want lagway to have to be the starter day1. Definitely gonna want someone around in 24 to compete with lagway.

Daniels spent two years at USC and two more at uga, mostly organizing Smart’s gay porn collection. So he was/is a Grad Transfer, which is different. There are no rules at the moment for that, mostly because they never expected anyone to stay in college for 6 years still trying to play a position they aren’t very good at.

Isn't arik Gilbert on his 4th school? He definitely doesn't strike me as a guy who graduated early.

I'm looking forward to Mertz next year. A lot of you are going to look like idiots.

I think he’s just a nutcase and they feel it’s not worth rocking the boat.

But if I recall, he sat out the second half of 20, and they gave a pass there because of Covid. Then, I’m not sure if he played 21, but he may have used family health as his exception request. Who knows.

The situations with Stokes, Kitna, and Rashada are out of BN’s control. Bad decisions made by all three guys it would seem….

Kirby floundered for three years and we laughed at the circus their qb position became, but here we are.

We’ve got recruits and transfers with size and/or a high talent ceiling coming in on both sides of the ball as the clean out takes hold.

Let’s ground and pound behind the new offensive linemen while Mertz hands it off to our excellent RBs. Get the freshmen on offense and defense out there early and often so they can learn the ropes.

Do the above and keep Lagway as the centerpiece of a strong 2023 class, and the worm will turn.

A lot of good points and spot on with them.

Whoever the QB is next season BN just wants someone who is going to listen and not be a case between the ears. I am not sold at all on Mertz. There is plenty there to make me go Meh. In the same token, there is something that can help you see the up side. This guy is truly an unknown, a project, and who knows how he will do. The post with the Varnadore Breakdown covers him very well. 3 OC's in 3 seasons. What stood out to me was the Coaching staff and how stupid Wisky was with their offense. They flat out sucked and no support players. The ran on 1st and 2nd down 69% time which sets up.....a 3rd and unmanageable. He only threw 9 play action passes all season and was 6 of 9 for completions. And when he threw on 1st down he had a 69% completion rate. I know that is some pumping but also there is plenty to see where this kid makes you think what the heck.

I really think it sets up to show us what Napier is doing. Rebuild it in the best way which he is doing with the LOS, WR's and the defense. The D should be notably better next year and absolutely bad azz in '24. Setting this all up as you say the center piece being Lagway. I am sure if he can get an upgrade at QB he will until we get him on campus. He has stated numerous times he needs 4 in there, and right now we only have 3 (Scholly QB's that is). Why not build your rebuild around ETN and Johnson. Get a QB that will listen and not kill us. And that's the biggest concern...... hoping the QB will not kill us but manage it.

Random thoughts on Mertz…

He’s the same height & weight that Napier was as a player, 6’3”, 205. Napier holds the career completion % record at Furman, playing in a run-first, play-action offense. If Mertz can be coached to better vision & decisions, Billy may be the guy to help him.

Per Gators Breakdown…

Mertz didn’t play under center in HS, so Wisconsin’s offense was never a good fit for him and Chryst never adapted to Mertz’ strengths. They ran on 1st & 2nd down more than any team in the country, and had no quick passing game at all. They only threw 10 play-action passes all season, Mertz completed 7 of them. They threw mostly on 3rd & long (which they were in a lot) and had slow-developing routes. They had also lost their 3 top receivers from 2021. It’s like he was playing for Muschamp and his coach got fired along the way.

The negatives are that he tends to stare down his primary WR and will throw into tight windows despite other guys being wide open, and will throw the deep ball because he either didn’t see or ignored an open intermediate route. He does have a good arm and has shown accuracy on those deep balls.

So the hope is that better fit, better coaching and better players around him will lead to fixing the weak parts of his game. He does have arm talent. The worry is that he is what he is and SEC defenses will be tougher.

The defense will improve if anyone can get to the QB. We haven’t had that since Greenard, Zuniga & Polite. Hopefully several of these DEs and Bucks will prove to be terrors.

:exactly:

Listened to that PC as well. Sounds like a lot of his bad decisions were that he had no options and was trying to make a play where nothing else existed. No matter how good/bad we are next year, he'll have an upgrade over Wisky. He is not an absolute run threat, but need just enough to keep the defense honest.
One thing on the PC I remember is Will Miles talking about getting Pearsall involved in the screen game. Henderson cannot make anyone miss. Pearsall only had two pass behind the LOS last year. A better quick passing game should help any QB, especially Mertz. Pearsall with this new incoming group gives us hope things improve there.

Agree. It was one of the better analyses I’ve heard in a long time. That comment on the screen game, especially the backside throw, was on point.

Lots of assumptions about lagway actually coming here, plenty of time for a decomit, lots of counting of chickens before the eggs hatch on here
