Anyone been recently? I’m taking my son in a couple of weeks and wondering just what they can take two days to tell parents. I get that they can fill up the kids time, but two days for parents? I anticipate having to sneak out at some point to keep my sanity. I’ve not spent much time in Gainesville over the last few years. Any good recommendations of good places to eat and/or get a beer? Because of the distance from home, we’re staying 3 nights and one of those nights Jr. will be occupied w/ UF activities.

Kind of depends where you're staying. If you're close to campus, go to the Social for wings and drinks. It pains me to say that, because I'm old-school and I remember the old Purple Porpoise, but I have to admit that the Social is pretty good If you're not familiar with the area, it's on University Avenue across the street and down a block or two from the stadium.

As for restaurants that are not too far from campus, go to Ballyhoos. It's also on University, but farther west heading out towards the Oaks Mall and I-75.

Staying on SW 40th by I-75, so those will work. Thx. As we get there the night before, my son might like checking out a spot next to campus.

I have two sons there now and I've PMd someone else about what is/isn't important at Preview... let me see if I can dig it up. HANDS DOWN, the most important thing he'll do is the 5 minutes he has with an "advisor" to register for classes and you need to tell him to be FIRM and PREPARED for those 5 minutes with a list of the EXACT section numbers for professors you've identified on things like "rate my professor" and BACK UP sections if the one he wants is full. Please trust me on this.

      Hopefully I have the PM.

By "orientation", do you mean like a visit/tour, or do you mean he's been accepted and you are talking about the formal "Preview" that he has to attend and will do Fall registration at? If you mean formal Preview/registration, here is what I have sent others that asked. First paragraph is more about once he starts school and all the websites you'll encounter, Preview stuff in bullet comments:

Congrats! Here is the thing you'll find, EVERYTHING is done online and it's not all in one place... there are about three different places that your son (and you guys to monitor things like payments due and any holds on the account, let alone what's going on with classes) will have to log in to get things done. Here's a couple of things you'll need to do right off the bat, some of which are probably in the preview checklists:

        • Formally accept and pay the deposit (or whatever it's called).
        • If he's going to live in the dorms, pay the housing deposit. Hopefully he applied for UF as early as possible as housing selection times are totally based on "first applied/first choice."
        • Figure out which Preview session you are going to because that's when he will register for his Fall classes. They say that it doesn't matter whether you go to the first session or the last, that they allocate course section slots for each Preview class, but I don't believe that for a second and recommend going to the earliest (if not first) Preview session offered this summer.
        • For that class registration session at Preview, ONLY your son will be with the "adviser", you are not allowed. Therefore, you need to do the following BEFORE going to Preview... please trust me on this:
          • He only needs 12 credit hours to be full time. A lot of classes at UF now are 4 credit hours, so he might only need (and I would advise) to actually be enrolled in 3 classes (4 max) that first semester at UF. I highly recommend that if he can get away with it because with it being first semester, football season, Rush if he's rushing.... you want to set him up for success with the most manageable workload possible.
          • That said, for both our sons at Preview, we registered them for between 15-17 credit hours because you have plenty of time before classes start to drop anything you decide you don't want. It gives you more flexibility. So register for 15-17, then drop and actually be enrolled for 12-14.
          • Don't just pick the courses he wants to register for ahead of time... you will be able to see all the actual SECTIONS for each course online before you go to preview. So, identify the courses and who is teaching them on the UF website, then go to www.ratemyprofessor.com and you can find almost all of the professors and find the easiest/best fit for you guys. Then go back to the UF website and make your list for registration with each course (e.g., ECO2013) AND at lease three SECTION numbers for that course that has the teacher you liked.
          • When your son goes into see the adviser at Preview to actually register, he should take his cheat sheet with course and section numbers, and then tell him to be very polite but VERY direct and saying "Please, I want THIS course with THIS section number"... and if none of your sections are available, we recommend not taking the class that semester... that's why you want to have two or three "plan b's" for registration or why you can register for say 17 hours that day, then drop what you want online at home.
          • The single most important thing he'll do at Preview is that 10 minutes with the "adviser." And I'm tellin ya, the "adviser" is just trying to jam kids though registration and will push him around if he's not prepared. Actual advisers in the colleges are much better, but Preview is a cattle process for registration.
I think that's enough for now! Let me know if it makes sense or if you have any questions at all. Also, any idea on what types of classes he is planning on registering for the Fall? I can probably provide input on that as well in the "looks good" or "WTF are you thinking?!?!!?" departments there too.

Oh, and yes... you will largely be bored as fuk. Other than meeting him at the couple of call outs you can attend together for specific colleges or study abroad kinda things, the rest of the parent sessions are a waste. They really should have a mandatory one for the student AND parent about navigating the different UF websites like for the eLearning, Bursar (paying things/holds on account) Canvas, ProctorU... there is not a single true "dashboard" even though eLearning looks like it is. At the very end, you want to get downstairs to the Bookstore basement as fast as he can to get his OneUF ID, or you'll be in line for a lonnnnng time.

This is the latter (accepted and formal preview, meet with advisor, etc.). This is some awesome advice. We’ll now be busy before our visit! Thanx very much. I will be reaching out for you soon.

Good point. The number one thing to learn about the meal plan and you can find a card with this at Preview on last day downstairs where you get OneUF ID, he can use his "meal swipes" at Subway, Wendy's, Papa John's, Panda Express... almost all the places on campus, but only for specific meals and times. I'm not talking about the "Flex Bucks", those can be used anytime, anywhere on campus. I mean that there are certain windows of time for certain meals at all those restaurants on campus when you can get a certain meal with a card swipe instead of eating at say Broward cafeteria.

I have not been recently but when I went with an engineering student, it was great to hear that the department wanted you and would support you as long as you did your part. When I attended the idea was to run out as many freshmen as possible to make room for transfers from community college. Things have sure changed a lot in many ways.

One more thing that is a must: join the Facebook group UF Families of 2023. It’s an official page that is staffed by UF personnel and they will answer specific questions and PMs about anything and everything from classes to IT to housing...

You will also find very useful posts/questions from other parents as well as witness INCREDIBLE comments from parents and helicopter mom’s melting down and complaining when they realize that their “brilliant and perfect Little Jimmy” isn’t so brilliant or perfect! The meltdowns are EPIC sometimes, but the wealth of info (like EXACT dorm room dimensions) and mods answering make it priceless

So, Future Gator and I survived the two days of UF Preview. First of all, huge shoutout to @Detroitgator. Great advice on prepping for the event. If any of you think you will be sending a kid to UF in the future, you should pin his comments.
As a first timer for sending a kid to college it was a pretty good event. The first day was very informative, but the second dragged a bit. Future however was kept pretty busy and is definitely fired up to be a Gator. Even enjoyed his overnight in Broward. (We had dinner in the Broward Dining Hall and have to admit it wasn’t bad.) I was sad to learn parents weekend is the Towson game. (Towson? Really?) Ah well, we’ll see the kid too I guess.

Thanks for the update, and I enjoy such games. It is great to (hopefully) see the Gators destroy their opponent and see most if not all of the players in the game at some point.

Forgot to tell you that on our first night in town we ended up meeting up with an old friend of the family who lives there and ate at Ballyhoos - it was actually her call, so kinda ironic. Place was packed, so the service was not the best, but the food was excellent. Definitely see us going back a bunch over the next four years
