I see that some conservatives (Rufo, Donald etc) have come out against Rufo. I believe they are wrong. To end the DEI office at the flagship university in Michigan required courage and clarity of purpose. Furthermore, his own statement shows that he understands how the State of Florida thinks and that he agrees with that thinking. This is a fortunate hire. We dodged a bullet.

Donalds and Rufo point out Ono’s comments: ‘climate change is the existential threat of our time’ (2023) and ‘slavery is America’s original sin’. Ono’s DEI stance ‘evolved’ as they say. There are signs of moderation in his comments on climate too (‘science based, no politics’) but he should clarify. And what he said to students in a commencement address about slavery (an appeasing throw-away comment?) should be clarified in historical context.

It may be that Santa Ono is guilty of insincerity—that he says and does that which suits the occasion. Question is, is he doing the same to secure the UF presidency?

You also have to pick your battles and be realistic in the world of politics... Desantis just had two of his Board of Trustees nominations at UWF shot down by the Republican dominated State Senate.

The candidate pool is rather shallow in that world if you’re trying to avoid leftists and modern culture appeasers.

:exactly:

I was just editing my post to add...

Ono is probably about the best one can hope for... regardless of what he said about them, in the end: 1) he condemned Hamas almost immediately, then doubled down on it when the cosplayers went batschit crazy, 2) he bulldozed the cosplayer camp pretty quickly, 3) he schit canned the DEI programs... all in a state where he had more political pressure to support/continue those things than to do what he did. His quote this week was to the effect that all the leadership in the State of Florida from the gov/legislature to Board of Governors to Board of Trustees are aligned in their goals, and that is RARE." That really indicates that he leans far more one way than the other, and it's the "good" way.

To assess the "who has he pissed off score":
  • On the left, he pissed off just about everyone.
  • On the right, he's pissed off "not ready for prime time/clearly displaying his inexperience and lack of knowledge" Byron Donalds, and some obscure "true believer" guy at New College who Desantis probably could not get installed today.
Oh, and everyone seems to agree that he cares about sports.

I'll take it.
