His contract is up in 11 days, they don't have to terminate him.

Exactly. Jones put him on notice in February by declining to renew his contract and turning over the playcalling to Kellen Moore.

This show going on in Dallas is about something other than Garrett remaining coach. Maybe he gets kicked upstairs.

Mullen actually makes more sense than most for an NFL job in the future. Everyone knows his biggest weakness is recruiting. Not saying I think he's going to the NFL anytime soon but I kinda understand the rumors.

Meyer is an elite coach for the same reason Saban is an elite coach, they get the best players. In the NFL that wouldn't be the case for Meyer just like it wasn't for Saban.

While i believe there's less than zero percent chance mullen is even on jones' radar, i totally agree with bait's comment above. Yes, meyer and dabo and saban are all great college coaches, but for the most part, because they are fantastic recruiters. They are good coaches but they are winning huge because of the obscene talent and depth advantage they have week in and week out. The ability to amass that talent is what sets them apart and is their biggest strength. In the NFL that strength is completely nullified. On the other hand, mullen does seem to compete pretty well against teams that have more talent and historically has been pretty mediocre on the crootin trail. So he's winning to a small extent despite talent, where the others are winning to a very large extent because of it. For that reason, a guy like mullen would arguably be more successful in the pros than the aforementioned others because the league is more or less a socialist sporting experiment where the worse you are, the more talent you can snag.

Just my take anyway.

I can't see Mullen as an NFL coach. I don't think NFL players would take him seriously enough for it to work. It's not necessarily a knock on him because young college players often need to be approached differently, but I question whether he's got enough of a commanding presence to successfully boss an experienced group of adult professionals around.

One word for you....... Gruden!

I agree. The one common theme with the majority of NFL coaches is they all seem super serious and dry. With the headcases you have to handle in a daily basis, I’m not sure you can be any different. And none seem to be very happy. That’s not Mullen. I often question whether he’s even serious enough to be elite at this level, much less the NFL. It doesn’t seem like a fit at all to me.

Watching NFL live right now and they mentioned Dan Mullen as a replacement. FYI.

Yeah, not really the reason they are great coaches. They get the best because they are the best at coaching them up and getting them in the league. Meyer was a great coach at Utah as was Saban at Mich St. If recruiting great talent made you an elite coach Musdump and Zook would have been elite.

Assuming the Giants don’t completely both things, and with a probable upgrade in Dallas, the East may have just become really stout. A lot of young offensive talent each are building around as well.

Exactly, I like (and hate) the Rivera hire and the potential new head coaches in Dallas and New York could be very interesting.

Exactly Bait n Gator, Mullen's strength is in X's and O's... if paired with a good GM (would question that in Dallas) he could do well on the pro level.

ESPN is reporting that they’re only looking into those HCs with extensive NFL experience.

The only two official interviews have been McCarthy and Marvin Lewis.... more candidates who were on the list opened up after this weekends games like Dan Campbell (Saints Assistant) and Josh McDaniels (Pats OC).

If so that would almost put McCarthy in the driver’s seat. They spent two days interviewing him, which shows the level of interest.

Just adding that Zimmer is a guy to watch according to a couple NFL beat guys. Apparently Jones has a lot of respect for him. Now that the Vikes have advanced, that interest will have to remain underneath the radar another week.
