I have a Belkin range extender... it's about 2 years old.
Never really saw a benefit or an increase in coverage.
But I went with the low cost model - which might explain why it kind of sucked.

In our old house I ran a Cat 5 cable from the main router to one of those Cisco/Linksys routers.
I turned off the DHCP function on the smaller router, gave it a static IP address and it worked great in the remote parts of the house as an extender.

I think you can hook an old router up wirelessly in bridge mode as an extender, but those netgear plug-ins look interesting.

This is what I didn't went I upgraded my wireless router. Have to keep two factor (due to work) in my house, so it was great to use another router instead of a repeater.

Repeater is an extender... I used a former router as a repeater, but was able to put in the two factor authentication on both routers... Have to have it, due to working at home on stuff we can't talk about here.

If you have an old linksys router, download dd-wrt firmware and turn it into a bridge or repeater.

I agree that another router as a repeater is the way to go. I have one that somehow got it's cable connector zapped, probably a lightning surge, and it's just begging for repeater use so I can still get on gator chatter when I'm working in my detached garage.

I've used both the little plug-in devices as well as a linksys router hacked with the dd-wrt. Both options worked fine for me. Obviously, re-flashing an existing router is more difficult than plugging in one of the small new devices.

^This! I stopped the router/repeater/extender madness at Christmas with an Orbi and two satellites and have had ZERO issues... best tech buy ever for me.

I've got one of these in the kitchen so the wifi doesn't drop off and on on mom down in her room which is at the opposite end of the house from my room where the modem/router is. It's made a huge difference in mom's connectivity.

The management works very hard to make sure the community is running the best software, best designs, and all the other bells and whistles. Care to buy us a non-alcoholic Zima? We'd really appreciate it! Just click the "Donate" tab at the top of the page.
