Okay, I’ll repost what I posted during the week 1 games (my original post was lost when Ox’s server went haywire). Paraphrasing here, but the games were very good, extremely entertaining and the quality of player was nearly NFL level.
No, all kidding aside, it sucked. There were a bunch of stiffs out there and it was boring as hell to watch, After 5 minutes, I turned on Shawshank Redemption. Despite having seen Shawshank about 200 times already, I found it much more compelling & entertaining. Why did they call him Red? Was he really Irish? Black Irish maybe (look it up)? And what was the joke Andy was making regarding the rock hammer? I’m still wondering about these unanswered questions. Inquiring minds want to know.
Back to the XFL, here’s how I think this plays out. The quality of play isn’t high enough to challenge the NFL and it’s getting more difficult to capture the eyeballs & time of busy people. Coming on TV right after the Super Bowl, I just don’t see enough people wanting to spend 3 hours of their time (in person or via television) watching mediocre players that couldn’t make it in the preeminent league.
I think they have more financial resources this time around so they will last a couple of seasons but they will eventually fold (2-3 at most). They won’t be a minor league system for the NFL. College football currently serves in that role & the NFL doesn’t need Vince McMahon to set that up for them. If they really wanted a true farm league apart from the NCAA, they could set it up themselves and do it better & cheaper.
Ultimately, the XFL may produce a few good novelty ideas that the NFL implements in their league, like what happened the 1st time around. Cameras on wires crisscrossing the field is one prior example. Maybe we’ll get to hear the helmet mike conversations between the OC & the QB in NFL games in the future. Other than that, this league won’t make it...unless they can rope a big, content hungry tech company like an Amazon into a deal to live stream the games. Other than that, the XFL is not compelling enough to make it.
