Same reason we have pre-madonnas who use smoking mirrors - lack of diction in the US has blurred the lines.

Of course I'm just as guilty as the next guy because I don't care about perfect diction. But I guess mom harped on my use of the English language enough for me to avoid most of the major blunders.
