Many people have argued that one of the reasons that Mullen struggles at recruiting is that he's use to recruiting a lower tier prospect cause that's all he could attract at Miss St. This is the reason why Smart is so successful cause he use to recruiting blue-chippers from his time at Bama, and why Pruitt is even out recruiting him cause he was at UGA,FSU, and Bama recruiting studs there as well. I don't really buy into this theory, I just don't think Mullen connects for some reason or another. He wasn't really a great recruiter under Meyer while he was here.

On the last Gators Breakdown podcast I was listening to and they were breaking down recruiting trends. They did point out James Franklin didn't get a top 10 class until his 4th class, and I thought that was surprising. His previous 3 classes were like from 14 to 25 or something like that, but those classes were still good enough for him to be in the top 3 in his conference each of those years. A 15th rated class at Florida likely gets you 6th best in your conference at best. Franklin was an offensive coordinator at Maryland i think before head coach at Vanderbilt, definitely he was recruiting a lower tier athlete to those schools as well, but I believe he had Vandy a top 25 class while he was there. Surprising to me that it took him to his 4th class to get a top 10 class, but Penn St didn't have the best reputation when he got there and that may have had something to do with it. They also pointed out Dabo at Clemson as another one that took 3 or 4 years to get in the top 10, but once again he was probably top 2 or 3 in his conference each year as well.

Unless something drastically changes this recruiting cycle, Mullen is gonna be hard pressed to cut some assistants to replace with better recruiters for next year. Also the Cali strategy has got to be abandoned like many on here have stated, what a waste. I can understand if there one complete stud out there that shows interest in us, then by all means try and land him, but we spent to much time out there when we should've been in our on backyard. Mullen has got to figure out how to take back this state in recruiting, it's ridiculous how terrible we do in our own backyard in recruiting.

How many commits do you expect during FNL? I’m hoping for 4 or more but I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get any. Lately, we’re the uncool kid that’s house gets used for parties and then everyone leaves until the next one.

We should land a few, but it will likely be another disappointing weekend. Not landing any would be catastrophic, I think we'll land 2 decent recruits.

I'm not really worried about quantity I would rather have quality. I'd rather get 1-2 highly rated top 200 4* players than two 3* players and two lower tier 4* players and all be rated 325 or worse.

I'm not expecting anything major this weekend...would love to be surprised though. At best we may get a couple 3* to commit like Kimbrough...

If all we get is 3* it is a loss. We need some blue chip recruits.

Yeah well apparently 2 losing seasons in the past few years isn’t a big sell...but apparently it’s working for Tennessee

Looks like we're looking at a JUCO OL, hopefully this is a Plan B:

JUCO lineman Jones planning to visit the Florida Gators

JUCO lineman Jones planning to visit the Florida Gators | GatorCountry.com

The Florida Gators have three offensive linemen committed in the 2019 class but are looking to add one to two more in the class.

One guy that is new to the board is JUCO offensive lineman Brandon Jones (6-5, 300, Georgia Military College) who talks to offensive line coach John Hevesy.

“Coach Hevesy is the main coach I talk to,” Jones said of his talks with Florida. “I talk to him pretty often. He’s a great coach.”

Hevesy hasn’t gone into much detail with Jones about where he would play and such but the lineman feels like the veteran coach can help him achieve his goals.

“He stresses to me how he can develop me for the next level and stuff,” he said of Hevesy’s message to him. “I can tell they want me very bad. We haven’t really discussed much because I don’t have the offer yet but I just recently switched from defensive line to offensive line.”

The Gators haven’t officially offered Jones yet but the JUCO lineman believes that an offer is coming.

“They’ve talked about it but not yet,” Jones said on if Florida has talked to him about when they may offer. “It’s for sure coming.”

If Florida does offer Jones, the Gators would be a top school for him as the lineman has grown up hearing about the Gators.

SEC recruiting rankings by average commit rating reveal different story for 2019 class

SEC recruiting rankings by average commit rating reveal different story for 2019 class

While Alabama may have the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class for 2019, in terms of average commit rating, Georgia is the top dog in the nation as we reach the end of July.

Here’s how the SEC programs stack up by average commit ranking and where they rank nationally within the top 30 recruiting classes in the nation for 2019 — all rankings and figures come via 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Cowbell landed plenty of Jucos in the last eight years.

I don't think we should assume he will do any different here.

Lower ceiling but higher floor with these kids.

When he was scheduled for 7pm pst he was a duck. Now that his announcement has been moved to 5pm pst is he a gator?
I'm sure we came in second, but that's something to be proud of. A year ago we wouldn't have been any higher than 3rd.

Looks like we added a new recruiting staff, Charles Lovett - a Florida guy who played WR at Colorado State under Butters. He doesn't have a profile on floridagators.com yet. Apparently has strong ties to Tampa, went to Hillsborough HS:

There's also a few other recruiting staffers that appear new, looks like they've (slightly) beefed up the staff:

Staff Directory - Florida Gators

Joey Fitzgerald & David Bowen.

Can't find much about him. Just this so far Lovett says McElwain earned his chance at UF
He is young. Hopefully he can learn to recruit.

I saw that article also. Kinda laughed....but honestly, Butters did win at CSU ("win" for what they were used to). He didn't recruit Lovett, as he was in his 2nd year when Butters arrived. So, he did see a turnaround.

I like the hire. Young kid, from a great recruiting area - that we need to get back into (like most of the state).

I'm curious if they're using interns/students like UGA and Alabama are doing. I'm sure Tennessee is doing it, or will be w/ Pruitt on board there. It's a great concept, to get these interns/students working 20+ hours a week, assisting w/ tedious chores that go along w/ recruiting. If we're not doing it, I'd like to know why not.
