In another portion of that interview, he said the biggest difference between Mullen and the previous staff were the in-game changes. Mullen would make constant adjustments during the game. The impression I got from it was that Butters didn't do much of that at all.
Butters didn't have a game plan he could change. I think he told the guys to go play the game.
