Well, in his defense, in the movie "The Natural", Roy Hobbs was Wonder Boy.

I know it's not a good picture but I was in a titty bar in East Lansing Michigan 5 or 6 years ago and ran into this guy. He was the only actual giant I've ever seen in person and I was really drunk so I had to take a picture. And if you've ever visited a strip club you know taking pictures is a huge no no. You can't see her in the picture but there was a topless girl off to the right of the mongaloid. She thought I was taking a picture of her and didn't believe me when I told her I was actually photographing the giant and not the nude chick. So I got kicked out, but this dude looked identical to Andre the giant in the face. I'm 6' 2" and he was at least a foot taller than me. He had the huge fat hands and all. Wish I'd snapped more pictures before I got kicked out but wasn't sure how he was going to respond to a drunk idiot taking his picture like he was a circus freak.

I went to see WWE wrestling at the old Palm Beach Auditorium in 1984. I stood along the entrance walk to the ring. I’d been to many pro wrestling matches and knew how heights and weights were overstated.

But Andre looked every inch of 7’5” and I’m sure actually 525lbs. Incredible.

A few years later I coaxed my new wife into a deal. I would go with her to see the Nutcracker ballet at Ruth Eckerd Hall in St. Pete if she would go with me to a WWE event at the USF Sun Dome the next weekend. The top of the card was shook Hogan vs. Andre.

Early on, an usher invited us to move from our nosebleed to ringside to fill it for TV - close enough to get hit by the sweat. We watched Hogan body slam Andre. The ring is essentially a trampoline, but still that was wild to see.

I met him backstage when I was a kid... the old Cape Cod Coliseum had no way to get to the ring area without walking through the concourse, so you could just hang back there. Met Andre, George 'the animal' Steele, Bob Backlund.. a whole bunch of them. Andre was enormous.. nice guy, too. Steele was super normal and polite.. was pretty jarring compared to his character..

Yeah, Steele has a masters degree was a HS teacher and coach before becoming a pro wrestler Pretty much the opposite of his character like you said.

I seem to recall hearing that as well.. of course, this was like 1980ish.. when there was still heated debate about whether or not wrestling was real.

Saw Andre take on Dusty Rhodes back in the day as a kid. Even then I thought this must be fake as this huge dude would just sit on the short fat guy.

Aside from my grandfather...
Was this ever REALLY a debate?

I saw Lex Lugar, Sting (pre-makeup) and Nature Boy at the Civic center in Trailerhassee in '87.
The "hits" were even 'faker' in person without the benefit of the TV camera angles.

Saw those three at a club later that night and man, those dudes were built solid.
I'm sure it was all natural too ...because, you know, Nature Boy.

Sat next to Macho Man (RIP) on a flight back to TPA from LAX... nicest guy, overly polite to the flight crew and fans.

Good night Gordon Solie...wherever you are!
