They got us at #21 (higher than Fox Sports which was released last week):

http://athlonsports.com/college-football/athlon-sports-2016-preseason-college-football-top-25

1.
alabama-crimson-tide.png
Alabama: The Crimson Tide suffered key losses on both sides of the ball, but this team reloads as well as any in the nation. Expect Nick Saban's team to lean on its defense and ground attack until the offense finds stability at quarterback.

2. Florida State: After winning 10 games in a rebuilding season, FSU is poised to challenge for the title. Most of the roster returns intact, but the Seminoles have to find a QB and replace cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Dalvin Cook is one of the frontrunners to win the Heisman.

3. Ohio State: The Buckeyes have the fewest returning starters (six) of any Power 5 team. However, thanks to elite recruiting classes, Ohio State should be able to reload in a hurry. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the Buckeyes can lean on J.T. Barrett until the rest of the pieces fall into place.

4. Clemson: Even though the Tigers suffered heavy losses on defense, quarterback Deshaun Watson and the nation’s top receiving corps is more than enough to keep Clemson in the hunt for the national title.

5. Michigan: Jim Harbaugh already has Michigan back among the nation’s top teams. The Wolverines have to find a quarterback, but this team can lean on its defense — led by new coordinator Don Brown — to push Ohio State for the Big Ten title.

6. Oklahoma: The Sooners are a heavy favorite to win the Big 12, but there are potential landmines on a schedule that features road trips to TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia. If the voids on the offensive line and defense are filled, quarterback Baker Mayfield could carry Oklahoma to another playoff berth.
7.
tennessee-volunteers.png
Tennessee: The Volunteers have made steady improvement under coach Butch Jones, and the pieces are in place to challenge for the SEC title. Tennessee returns 18 starters, including quarterback Joshua Dobbs and end Derek Barnett.

8. Notre Dame: Brian Kelly’s team lost a handful of key players from last year’s 10-3 squad. But the Fighting Irish have a manageable schedule, two proven quarterbacks and enough of a foundation on both sides of the ball to push for 10 wins once again.
9.
lsu-tigers.png
LSU: After coaching drama surrounding Les Miles at the end of 2015, LSU is loaded for a run at a CFP berth. As usual, the Tigers will lean on their ground attack and defense to carry the team. However, Brandon Harris and the passing game have to improve to win the SEC.
10.
mississippi-rebels.png
Ole Miss: Hugh Freeze must replace three first-round picks, but the Rebels have recruited well enough to prevent a huge drop off. Chad Kelly is the SEC’s top signal-caller and there’s no shortage of options at receiver.

11. Washington: The Huskies are poised for a breakthrough year in Chris Petersen’s third season. Talented sophomores Jake Browning and Myles Gaskin are two of the Pac-12’s top players on offense, while the defense returns eight starters from a unit that allowed only 18.8 points a game last year.

12. Stanford: Stanford has won three of the last four Pac-12 titles, but David Shaw’s team was hit hard by personnel departures. However, the Cardinal still has enough returning talent to challenge for the conference title — especially with running back Christian McCaffrey leading the way.

13. Michigan State: The Spartans have won at least 11 games in five of the last six years. Despite the loss of quarterback Connor Cook, end Shilique Calhoun and standout linemen Jack Conklin and Jack Allen, coach Mark Dantonio won’t allow Michigan State to slip too far in the rankings.

14. Baylor: The Bears suffered heavy losses on the line of scrimmage, but Art Briles’ team will be a factor for the Big 12 title again. The offense is loaded with skill talent, and quarterback Seth Russell returns after missing the second half of last season.

15. UCLA: Similar to rival USC, UCLA enters 2016 with its share of questions. However, the Bruins return the Pac-12’s top quarterback in Josh Rosen, and the schedule is more manageable than the Trojans’ brutal slate. The defense returns eight starters, and standout end Eddie Vanderdoes is back from injury.

16. Houston: The bar is set high for Houston after a 13-1 record in Tom Herman’s first season. The Cougars are the top Group of 5 team for 2016 and could climb into the playoff discussion with wins over Oklahoma and Louisville in non-conference games.

17.
georgia-bulldogs.png
Georgia: New coach Kirby Smart inherits a roster filled with promising talent and one of the nation’s top quarterback recruits in Jacob Eason. However, running back Nick Chubb is recovering from a serious knee injury, and the defense features a revamped front seven.

18. TCU: TCU will be a dark horse contender in the Big 12. Only one starter returns on offense, but there’s a good foundation in place at the skill positions. The Horned Frogs are loaded on defense and return four key players who missed all or most of last year due to injury.

19. Louisville: The Cardinals finished the 2015 season by winning six of their final seven games. Bobby Petrino’s team should build on that momentum in 2016 with 16 returning starters and the emergence of dynamic quarterback Lamar Jackson.

20. Iowa: The Hawkeyes were one of college football’s biggest surprises in 2015 and open 2016 as the heavy favorite to win the Big Ten West. Quarterback C.J. Beathard leads the way on offense, while the defense returns eight starters. Team Preview
21.
florida-gators.png
Florida: The defense is still among the best in the SEC, but Florida has to find some answers on offense after averaging 12.6 points over the final six games of 2015. Oregon State transfer Luke Del Rio is expected to start at quarterback. Team Preview

22. North Carolina: New quarterback Mitch Trubisky is a rising star, and the supporting cast is among the best in the ACC. The defense showed some improvement under new coordinator Gene Chizik last year but has to get tougher against the run. Team Preview

23. USC: Clay Helton’s first full season on the job features one of the nation’s toughest schedules, a quarterback battle and a completely revamped defensive line. Team Preview

24. Oregon: The Ducks hope another FCS transfer (Dakota Prukop) is the right answer at quarterback. There’s no shortage of skill talent on offense, but the line must replace three starters. Brady Hoke is tasked with improving a defense that surrendered 37.5 points a game. Team Preview

25. Oklahoma State: Mason Rudolph to James Washington should be one of the Big 12’s top quarterback-receiver combinations in 2016. However, for the Cowboys to match last year’s 10 wins, the offensive line and rushing attack have to improve. Florida was one of college football’s biggest surprises last season. The Gators finished 10-4 and claimed the SEC East title under first-year coach Jim McElwain. While McElwain’s first season was a success, there’s plenty of work ahead for this team in 2016. The offense struggled after the suspension of quarterback Will Grier in the second half of last year. Transfer Luke Del Rio is slated to replace Treon Harris under center, but question marks remain on the offensive line and in the receiving corps. Despite losing a couple of key pieces, the defense should remain one of the best in the SEC. Winning the East Division once again will be a challenge, but an improved offense should allow Florida to stay within striking distance of Tennessee and Georgia in 2016.

Previewing Florida’s Offense

In four seasons under Will Muschamp, the Florida Gators had five different starting quarterbacks, three offensive coordinators and some of the nation’s least-productive attacks. Florida hired Jim McElwain to breathe some life into the side of the ball the Gators were known for under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.

Florida showed promise early on, highlighted by a 38-point outburst against Ole Miss. But after the NCAA suspended quarterback Will Grier for violating its policy on performance-enhancing drugs, the Gators went into a tailspin with Treon Harris at the helm.

McElwain now turns to transfer Luke Del Rio, the son of Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, or Purdue graduate transfer Austin Appleby. The winner of the quarterback race will become Florida’s ninth starting quarterback since Tim Tebow’s final season, in 2009.

Last season, the Gators’ lack of depth and experience up front were hard to overcome. At times UF started three true freshmen and ended the season surrendering a nation-leading 45 sacks. Left tackle David Sharpe is the veteran of the group, while sophomore Martez Ivey looks to live up to his billing as the nation’s No. 1 offensive line recruit in 2015.

McElwain values a physical run game, the backbone of his offenses during four seasons at Alabama (2008-11). Sophomore Jordan Scarlett hopes to emerge from the shadow of 1,000-yard rusher Kelvin Taylor and lead Florida’s trio of tailbacks. Keep an eye on juco transfer Mark Thompson.

Receiver Antonio Callaway is a gamebreaker who averaged 17.6 yards and scored six touchdowns on 69 touches. But the Gators still need more from their receiving corps.

Previewing Florida’s Defense

Order a copy of Athlon's 2016 SEC Preview, which includes an in-depth look at all 14 teams, features and predictions for the upcoming season.

Muschamp left behind the ingredients for a top defense, and new defensive coordinator Geoff Collins did not squander the opportunity. The Gators ranked fourth in the SEC in both total defense and scoring defense in 2015. But the physical and mental fatigue of propping up a moribund offense took its toll, and Florida yielded 503 yards to Michigan during a 41–7 Citrus Bowl beat-down.

The Gators look to bounce back despite losing some key pieces, including two All-Americans (cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III and tackle Jon Bullard) and a tone-setting safety (Keanu Neal). Many quality players remain, beginning with All-SEC cornerback Jalen Tabor and one of the SEC’s best linebackers, senior Jarrad Davis. Junior cornerback Quincy Wilson and senior safety Marcus Maye are established SEC talents, giving Florida a top secondary once again.

The Gators’ defensive line is loaded, beginning with tackle Caleb Brantley and end Cece Jefferson. Senior end Bryan Cox Jr. is equally effective against the run and pass, while two young ends — Keivonnis Davis and Jabari Zuniga — have bright futures. Quality depth abounds, too.

Previewing Florida’s Specialists

Placekicker Austin Hardin has moved on after making just 16-of-36 field goals at Florida, opening the door for Eddy Pineiro, a former Alabama commit best known for kicking a 77-yard field goal on YouTube. Punter Johnny Townsend is among the nation’s best and averaged 45.4 yards per kick in 2015. Callaway scored twice as a punt returner.

Final Analysis

florida-gators.png

McElwain led Florida to a 6–0 start and its first top-10 ranking in three seasons en route to the Gators’ first outright SEC East title since 2009. But a season-ending three-game skid exposed Florida’s deficiencies on offense, and teams outscored the Gators 97–24 during that stretch. Despite the ugly finish, McElwain brought a new vibe to the program, selling out The Swamp four times and overseeing facility upgrades. But to take the next step on the field, McElwain must develop a long-term answer at quarterback.

I'm thinking after we beat #7 UToothless for the 11th time straight in Knoxville, we will probably move up no more than 3 spots and they will still be ranked ahead of us.

The tailspin comment with Treon was kind.

Kind of surprised we gave up a nation leading 45 sacks but Harris was just taking sacks there in the later games instead of getting rid of the ball many times. Even with the true freshman you didn't see a bunch of guys running unblocked to the QB like in prior years but there wasn't much push at all in the run game due to so many freshman playing on the O line.

I don't see how Clemson isn't #1. There's not a defense in the country that will be able to stop that offense.

Yep they are good. I guess because they play at FSU but the rest of the schedule doesn't look that tough at all. I guess at Auburn to open the season could turn out to be a tough game but I don't think Auburn is expected to do that well this year.

So we're predicted to be worse than Washington, Houston, Louisville and Iowa.

So that means Athlon believes either 1) those teams have better talent than we do, or 2) that have better coaches than we do.

I haven't seen any of those teams at the top of the recruiting rankings so.......

Athlon always has the most boring Top 25. They always put the best of last year into the top 5, and they never make any bold predictions that no one else will make, unlike Phil Steele. Of course not many want to pick UF to win the East until they see how good Del Rio is, and apparently a perfect spring game isn't enough for most the media to have confidence in the QB position. Oh well. I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over that. After a month into the season, I think everyone's opinion of the offense will change.

They're gonna kill auburn. That one won't even be close. Fsu might give em a game but I doubt it. Clemson's offense moved the ball like they were playing against air in the championship game and they bring most of their guys back on that side.

JB, I understand what you are trying to say....but take a look at our record and stats the last 6 years during the first month of the season. (Meyer's last year, 4 of Muschamp, and 1 w/ McElwain)....we've actually been very, very good the "first month of the season". It's the 2nd month that has killed us (and 3rd month).

Talent and coaches may not have anything to do with it all.
IDK, could just as easily be based on schedule and how they finished up last year - each of these teams is going to have a decent record mainly because they don't play anybody in 2016, for the most part.
UW plays Stanford, USCw, Oregon and WSU (all 4 in the top 25 - but based on what?) - From my recollection, the PAC-12 did fairly well in their bowl games (but playing lesser opponents for the most part), so maybe that bowl record factored in to get 5 PAC-12 teams in the top 25, along with a very weak OOC schedule for UW. UW won their bowl game as well.
Houston plays Oklahoma, Cincy, Louisville and Memphis (OK and Louisville are only 2 in the top 25, and those are the OOC games - weak conference when your toughest opponents are Cincy, Memphis and Tulsa) - Houston waxed FSU in their bowl game, so their ranking could have something to do with that as well.
Louisville plays FSU, Clemson and Houston (all 3 in top 25, then it's all OOC and ACC creampuffs) - Louisville also won their bowl game over A&M
