He should have been asked to leave by now. But he has the Joe Paterno syndrome of thinking he is bigger than his university and gets to stay. This is ending messy for old Jim and The Cuse. He should be asked or made to leave after this season.

It's apparently a strategic move. He's more or less doing the school a favor. He could leave now, and the school will suffer, as will the next coach. Or, he can stick around for the duration of the penalties, and while the school will suffer still, the next coach won't. They would have had a hard time selling the position to a new coach, so why not keep him around until you have a clean slate to offer the next coach.
