If they end up having to pay them from the schools’ coffers, then you’ll see well over half of the athletic programs shut down. No way most can afford scholarships and salaries.I’m not for the idea of unionizing athletes in principle, however, considering the state of college sports, and where we are now, I am not entirely sure that there is a better solution out there. At least, if they unionized, they can collectively bargain, and therefore normalize the playing field across all athletics. I was making the point to an acquaintance the other day that at this point college sports is worse than any pro league. All professional sports are governed by an understood set of rules and generally understood calendar of circumstances as far as how long you can expect a certain player on your roster, and the ability to plan ahead for when players contract expires or when they will hit free agency. Currently the model inwhich college athletics finds itself mired is complete chaos.
