I’m not for the idea of unionizing athletes in principle, however, considering the state of college sports, and where we are now, I am not entirely sure that there is a better solution out there. At least, if they unionized, they can collectively bargain, and therefore normalize the playing field across all athletics. I was making the point to an acquaintance the other day that at this point college sports is worse than any pro league. All professional sports are governed by an understood set of rules and generally understood calendar of circumstances as far as how long you can expect a certain player on your roster, and the ability to plan ahead for when players contract expires or when they will hit free agency. Currently the model inwhich college athletics finds itself mired is complete chaos.
If they end up having to pay them from the schools’ coffers, then you’ll see well over half of the athletic programs shut down. No way most can afford scholarships and salaries.

I agree. The NIL coupled with the transfer portal gives pretty much all the power to the students. Not good IMO. I would rather see the portal tightened up to force kids to at least stay put for longer than one season. They make soft commitments but the schools spend a lot of $$ with little hope for a return.

Dartmouth’s tuition is over $63k and total cost of attendance is over $87k. That’s their base pay. Now add full medical, tutoring, training/rehab, and, and and it’s quickly over $100k.

AND oh by the way, you’re getting an opportunity for Ivy League education & diploma, which billions of Asian kids are competing for a shot at.

AND oh by the way, Dartmouth sports DON’T MAKE ANY MONEY YOU INGRATE MENSA IDIOTS!

Dartmouth is in the Ivy League .... there are no athletic scholarships.

The school does have a fabulous needs-blind admission policy and funding for those who need financial help. IIRC, it's entirely grants or p/t work ... no loans whatsoever.

ALSO ... MODS wake up ... it's Dartmouth COLLEGE. (I have relatives who are alums who would be annoyed.) Please fix the title of this thread. Thx.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. (See my correction in post #16.) What you’ve shared makes the whole union move sillier.

I’d be curious to know if my assumptions are correct that Dartmouth athletics and basketball in particular don’t make a profit.
