Very sad. But how does this happen on a sandbar in the gulf? Could he just not swim at all?

Still remember him and Arky coming into the Swamp and almost beating the '09 team. Very uncomfortable game to watch until the winning fg was kicked.

I remember times in Pensacola when we would swim out to the sandbar and could stand out there. It might have been 50-75 yards out. It was 15 foot deep on the way out there and back. Thats where the rip tides get you.

If you don't know how to swim out of rip currents, it's very easy to drown. Something we were taught as kids here growing up near the beach. Sad news. RIP.

I'm nearing 61 and have learned the last few years to pass on big breaking waves on the offshore sandbar just to body serf, if it means swimming fifty yard fighting a swift current. Hate to see them go so young.

Most think they can out swim it. They get tired and drown.
You can't out swim it so go with the current and angle to the direction you NOW want to go...you'll be OK and will live.

RIP Ryan.

Good to know!

My sister & I both learned that lesson when I was about 11 @ St. Pete Beach one Sunday afternoon. My dad was out with us to be sure we knew how to swim and float back into calmer water. Rips are deadly if you fight them & tire.

Right. It’s like you’re in a river current, go left or right to get out of it then swim in.
